Title: Diesel engines Can Run Underwater ?
Post by: neilep on 21/10/2007 19:40:36
Dear Engineers,

See this engine that I lifted up from my kids scalextric ?

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

I found out that diesel engines can work when submerged in water ?

Why's that then?...and could we make petrol engines work submerged underwater too ?

Thank ewe

hugs

There is no reason why a petrol engine shouldn't work underwater if it has the electrics well insulated, is fuel injected, has an air intake & exhaust above water. Apart from the electrics and the fact that diesels are injected anyway, the same considerations apply.

I had a petrol Landrover that was converted to be able to drive through rivers. The air intake & exhaust stuck up at the rear corners of the bonnet (hood) and the electrics were well sealed.

You would also need to modify the cooling system (not least the cooling fan) to manage the thermal characteristics and fluid dynamics of water rather than air.

I don't think the fan on mine was altered. But, then again, it wasn't designed for long-term submersion.

Cant see the problem most engines are water cooled these days anyway  [:D]Come to think of it a beetle engine would be perfect.
