Alec Keon asked the Naked Scientists:
Chris,
I am a new listener (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) and serious fan of the podcast (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/)!
I was wondering if the team could enlighten me as to why farting while bathing/in the shower smells distinctly different and considerably worse than regular atmospheric gas-passing.
Thanks!
Alec
What do you think?

I'm not sure how you've determined this Alec, there doesn't seem to be much difference to my way of thinking. The only thing that comes to mind is; Maybe it's just because your in a more tightly confined space and the odor may be stronger because of that. I don't think the odor is any different, maybe it's just more concentrated?

Perhaps at other times your clothes do a little filtering. Do you have trousers (US = pants) impregnated with charcoal?(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthump01.pbase.com%2Fo6%2F61%2F114161%2F1%2F86440239.IV6QZzhB.fartinbed.gif&hash=ba7cc1a59b005c6f7508a6b5ebc415e6)

Ha,ha,ha,haaaa..................I just love the gif Don..., and about the charcoal thing: Maybe the stink is not comming from a fart but from something else which the trousers are impregnated with????

I'd go with Don_1's answer about the filtering

Based on a control experiment conducted in a confined space but wearing clothes (caving), I can assure you it is 99% confined space effect, and the absorption must play a minor role. ;)

Been doing an Inspector Clouseau in a lift eh?

I take your word for it. No documentation needed.
