New Theories / Re: What is the ''speed'' of ''time''?
« on: 11/03/2017 22:46:24 »

I can't quite see what you're getting at.  I mean when a composer uses standard musical notation, he or she can write a sustained musical note, lasting perhaps several seconds,  on paper by a single symbol.

This written symbol can be read by eye, in a split-second. The musical note takes longer to play. There's no necessary time correlation between the two.

Therefore I don't yet understand the point of your diagram, and will grateful for clarification, thanks!

The Environment / Re: Are climate skeptics right that there is no link between CO2 levels and temperature?
« on: 11/03/2017 21:57:14 »
Actually Bc, I do remember the 1970s .  Then "Global Cooling" was all the rage,  There were TV programmes about the imminent global freezing catastrophe.
Climate scientists came on the telly and foretold chilly doom.  But when the doom didn't happen, they didn't admit they were wrong. They just went quiet. Or died.

These theories in Science sometimes exhibit a cyclic tendency, don't you think.  Especially when no-one really knows what they're talking about.

OK, today it's all "Global Warming". But what odds would you offer that by, say 2030,  it'll be "Global Cooling" that's the threat, and we must pump up CO2 production to ward off the new Ice-Age?

New Theories / Re: Is poker a skill game?
« on: 11/03/2017 21:18:11 »
Thanks BC, I read the link you very kindly provided.  It shows, possibly, that poker is not just about mathematical odds.  Anyone can work out the odds of drawing another King, say, when you already have 3 Kings in your hand and there are 4 other players.

That's just basic maths.  Does the skill come from watching the other players, and seeing how they react to their cards, I mean like do they perspire when they've got a good hand, or show an unusual and obviously calculated indifference, or whatever.

That's why I don't really care much for poker. It relies too much on the human element.  Which is fine if you like humans.

As LB7 perceptively points out in post #33, "time" can only be a reference.  It's not an independent "thing" existing in its own right.

As a comparable example, consider the word "distance".  Is it a distinct "thing" ?  Or just a reference for the separation between entities.

Suppose you say, there's a distance of 193 kilometres between London and Manchester. Does that mean there's an actual "thing", an entity, which can always be called "distance"?

Physiology & Medicine / Re: What is the science of gender designation?

As you imply 5th, the orgasm seems primarily responsible for reproduction,  Otherwise we wouldn't do it.  Why replicate successors to yourself, if it makes you die?

Could neurologists abolish the orgasm?  I mean could they find a nerve to cut, which would stop it.   Is any work being done in this field?

Poker seems like a game where the players are given cards which have been shuffled and distributed at random.

So if each player picks up a set of random cards, where does the skill come into it?  I mean, what is the "skill" that makes a good poker player better than a bad one?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: What do you call the coloured light that comes out of stained glass?
« on: 11/03/2017 18:38:45 »
As you say, the trend is towards dramatic effect. So perhaps modern churches should replace their stained-glass windows with 4-K LED screens. With motion.

But would that impress the worshippers, or make them disillusioned, as modern congregations have seen "Star Wars"?

The Environment / Re: Are climate skeptics right that there is no link between CO2 levels and temperature?

Isn't this the problem - so many scientists have publicly committed themselves to the idea that climate-change is caused by humans, that they could never admit they got it wrong?

New Theories / Re: Equivalancy in Relativity
« on: 11/03/2017 18:06:48 »
Yes, I agree with you.  There is no actual, concrete, solid object which we could call "physics".  It's not like calling a spade a spade , because that's what it obviously is.

Physics is (or should be)  really about understanding how things work.  In order to make this clearer,  I think the impressive but misleading Graeco-Latin word "physics" should be replaced by a plain Anglo-Saxon equivalent.

Would a word such as "Stufflore", or better "Knowstuff", convey the concept more transparently?

A good post, but it won't lead to any new physics.  The author of the post is too obsessed with Einstein.

A very interesting post.

How could this forum have evolved by "Natural Selection"?

Science doesn't want emotions.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: What do you call the coloured light that comes out of stained glass?
« on: 10/03/2017 20:07:21 »
When you look at stained glass windows, you see these colours:

RED,  YELLOW,  GREEN,  BLUE.

These are good colours, and very impressive.  But why don't we see more colours, like ORANGE? Have you ever seen a church window in orange colour?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Does a photon have inertia?

If a "photon" is an actual particle, and it's travelling at the speed of light, why hasn't it got any mass?

I believe humans evolved using any and all materials from the environment including animal skin/sheddings, organ tissue, leaves, seaweed, stoppers including smooth pebbles wood/stems and anything else they could get their hands on as a form of daily accessible natural condom/birth control, in addition to the popular known methods of ovulation timing and pulling out, even diet based miscarriage techniques and manual abortion have played a vital role in human survival as men are designed to require sex at an absolute minimum of once every 2 weeks or else begin to have nocturnal emissions which only wastes both the pleasure of orgasm and viable sperm

You may be right. Men really only want one thing.  That has determined the course of history.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: How do we moderate discussion of new theories in the main part of the forum?

Surely the answer is quite clear.

Don't post anything that is politically incorrect.

Could we create a wormhole into a new universe by somehow combining blackholes from the right angles?

Thanks 5th, but could you expand a bit on what you mean by "the right angles"?

New Theories / Re: Healthy schizophrenia?

Interesting post.  I've never heard any extraneous alien "voices" talking in my head.  Not even when drunk.

I think that people  who  hear voices are bonkers.

A close friend of mine who is gay, told me that he prefers circumcised men, because (to quote his words),  "you see it more".  I don't know whether this is to be believed.
