I increasingly write the date in that order too.

There are two advantages to it.

Firstly, there is no ambiguity in whether you are writing US or UK date orders - the date order in unambiguous (there could be ambiguity if some culture were to use YYYY-DD-MM dates, but none do, so the date if obviously YYYY-MM-DD).

The other way of avoiding such ambiguity is what the Hungarians used to traditionally do, which is to write the month in roman numerals, and the date and year in Arabic numerals.

Secondly, it makes sorting dates a lot easier (i.e. since the most significant value, the year, is at the front, a character sort will automatically sort dates first in year order, then in month within year, and then in day within month).
