I had to laugh yesterday. A pair of magpies got a bit close to the stable where the swallows are nesting. Mum & dad swallow divebombed them repeatedly & eventually the magpies bogged off.

You don't get many of these in the city either. We get dozens of them in the fields at the yard. When we arrive it's like a mini stampede with all the rabbits running for cover.

And this is another of our little visitors.

This little fellow was sitting on the bonnet (hood in the U.S.) while I was in the driver's seat. He was no more than 3ft away from me. Unfortunately he flew away as I reached for my camera, but then decided to pose for me on this piece of corrugated iron fence.

COOL Pictures, I believe but don't qoute me that the bottom swallow is your male, he seems to have a touch of greenor shimmer to his back feathers the females are usually less colorful,.. but of coarse I could be wrong! It seems more colorful then the other!

What is the other bird? Do you know?

I thought that about the male too. He just looks more butch LOL. He may look brighter-coloured because the sun came out as I was focusing on him.

The other bird is a pied wagtail.

The snails here vary from pale yellow to dark brown with varying shades of red thrown in for good measure. We never used to get these brightly-coloured ones where I used to live.

Or rock diving.

I can't swim.. LOL Do you dive doc??

Speaking of diving..Those barn swallows are sure good divers if you encroach on their nesting area.. they swoop down and dive bomb you,, pretty protective and fearless.. I think it is an admirable trait in the little beauties!

Do they return every year Doc and are they the only ones nesting.

We've only had this yard for 2 months so we don't know if they return each year.

They're the only pair nesting there.

You Know swallows do usually return , sometimes repeatdly to the same nest if you don't knock it down. W ehave had a pair nest 5 years in a row.  They are really cool to watch. they were on our front porch. If we came out mommy would leave and watch us from the telephone line above the porch.. if she got worried you were to close, she would dive bomb you sweeping in as if to try to frighten you away from her babies!
