Hi Karen, I may be able to help as computer music is a pastime of mine, I've done lots of dodgy tracks.... [;D]
I'm not too familiar with some of the Cakewalk range but have recently bought Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio as my other sequencer is getting a bit old.
Which version do you have as there are quite a few and some of the older Cakewalk stuff has now bee replaced.
Info needed if possible:
Version of sequencer, computer cpu, ram and sound card as that will determine what you can do or use.
To be any good it needs to be vst or directx capable that way you can use some of the many free vst synthesizers or fx, these are software emulations of real hardware. Trouble is you need a fairy fast cpu to keep up with all the real-time processing. Many can also be purchased and some can cost over $400 but as I said there are lots of free ones, I have over 200 vst synths, samplers and fx racks!
Some vst info:

You don't have to use vst so if the computer is not fast enough you could use the built in GM midi sounds that normally are on the sound card. The quality of GM sound though is not that good. Be warned, its a big learning curve, can take time and be frustrating at times.
That's not a bad link another_someone.
