Title: How Does Darth Vader Eat?
Post by: MDriver1981 on 20/02/2009 22:44:04
I was watching The Empire Strikes Back, and was observing the scene where Darth Vader is at a dinner table greeting Han Solo.  The dinner scene never takes place...  So... I was thinking... how does Darth Vader eat!?  Does he open his metallic mask (Like Dark Helmet) and just pour mashed potatoes or coffee down his mouth?

Here it is:

Anakin Skywalker was augmented with cybernetic enhancements (remade his body)and this procedure is what kept him alive, however the telekinetic fury displayed was another form of absorbing energy he used to feed himself also. He was transformed into some form of cyborg, from Anakin to Darth Vader.

When delving into homeostasis - particularly the digestive tract and the bowels, it pays to know something. Regardless of the future, whether 1 day from now, or 5O OOO years....it will be impossible to eliminate waste disposal in our systems unless we are almost entirely cybernetic (Separatist General) There is no doubt that in the future medication, stimulants, and physical implants can REDUCE and temporarily halt the need to excrete wastes, but it will need to take place sooner or later. The realistic goals would be: *to have the kidneys and gall bladder filter much more than usual (while avoiding salt losses) *having the purine system convert its complex ammonia<>ammonium<>uric acid<>urea procedure slower which results in less urination (though this could have toxic ramifications) *and having the urinary bladder hold more waste and longer. Large problems to overcome would of course be what to do with fecal waste since their disposal cannot be rid of or stored as easily as urine, and catheters only drain the bladder of urine. Catheters would also always carry the burden of needing a highly sterilized environment to prevent infection right into the digestive tract.....

Darth Vader simply has hygenic facilities within his breathing quarters aboard the Executor and the Death Star, when his apparatus is not needed - and his armoured case most probably delays restroom requirements for large amounts of time (between missions)

If you were talking about the actor, he would have mad a bundle enough in other movies to use the onsight canteen, for the movie, really for the movie its an unfriendly business gesture, so he doesn't need to eat in front of luke and others, its an old business meeting piece of symbolysis that says "i gotta eat" to pests they meet that are competing.

I thought the armour was put in place to protect and rebuild Anakin's damaged body, not to transform him into part-cyborg (although, granted, some of the 'parts' would be pretty advantageous). Therefore he would still be human underneath, and therefore still have the same nutritional and excretional requirements. No-one eats or wees in films anyway. I'm not a total star wars nerd, so will rely on someone who is to put me right!

Freddy says he is a cyborg but if he did need to eat and poo, he reckons that they would rig up some kind of pumping device, like a petrol pump at one end and a vaccum evacuation system at the other. He thinks that Dyson has the contract.
