Title: Only in the good old USA!
Post by: paul.fr on 05/08/2008 18:26:52
Could this happen anywhere else? Can anyone offer an explination as to why Americans do this?

----------------------------------------------

ITN - Tuesday, August 5 12:40 pmThe loss of Booger the pit bull terrier was almost more than Bernann McKinney could bear.

Now she is happy, minus £25,000 and her house, and owner of five cloned Booger puppies.

"It is a miracle for me because I was able to smile again, laugh again and just feel alive again," Ms McKinney told a news conference in the South Korea capital to show off the week-old black puppies - all of whose names include the word Booger.

They are the work of the biotech firm RNL Bio, affiliated with the South Korean lab which produced the world's first cloned dog.

She sold her house in the United States to raise the £25,000 for RNL scientists to turn skin cells taken from Booger before he died two years ago into embryos carried by two surrogate dogs for two months until giving birth to the puppies last week.

"I had to make sacrifices and I dream of the day, some day when everyone can afford to clone their pet because losing a pet is a terrible, terrible loss to anyone," she said.

After rescuing him from a shelter 12 years ago, Booger had become an indispensable part of her life, said the 57-year-old Californian.

The lab said it hoped to make its technology more commercial along with its programme to clone sniffer dogs for the Korean customs service.

"As of today, we are at the stage of receiving orders from anywhere in the world," RNL CEO Ra Jeongchan said.

RNL has said it expected to clone about 100 dogs next year and for the price to drop as technology improves.

Could it happen anywhere else? No. Only an American would name her dog after nasal dross!

LOL....I was trying to decide which was worse.  Selling your home to clone a dog or naming one booger!  Although.....I did have a cat named Damnit once.

Just for the record, this American as well as most of the ones I know, would NEVER do something so outrageous!

As I seem to remember it was the English who started this whole mess.

Anyone remember this in 1996? And this animal died of a drug overdose - IN ENGLAND!

It's not as if Dolly was injecting heroin  [:)] , she was euthanased because of her poor health.
She was prematurely aged, apparently her cells were her age plus the age of the cell from which she was cloned.

These new Boogers will not be the same as the original Booger as nurture plays a part in personality.

A lady in Scotland lost her daughter and firstly wanted to clone her but was told this was out of the question so then she wanted to have a baby that would be a garuanteed girl. She was refused again. This woman's grief was much more extreme than the woman with the dog. Let sleeping dogs die for god sake. This is just one person who can't face death and loss. Everyone has to do it. This woman should nip down to the dogs home and give a homeless dog some love.

Like JimBob?

Obviously the Beaver is out of his knowledge "comfort zone." (Yes, he actually does have a smattering of knowledge.) The above statement is just stupid, lacking sense and any knowledge of current (or past) events.

I asked because I don't believe anyone can be as old as you are and still be semi-functional.

It is exceedingly strange that you should ask. After all, we BOTH were around when dirt was created.

No. My birth was contemporaneous with dirt's great great grandchild.

That still makes you older than God.

Ye-es, dude! Are you, like, totally out of it? God and I are, like, best buds; we text each other all the time! And he is not made of dirt, old dude. He sits on my couch, DUH!. He is made of plastic. You know, that plastic they make almost everything out of. OH! OH! OH! OH!  - I know, I  know - god is like one of those statues of Mary with glue on her feet that you can put on the dashboard of you car.

He is just AWESOME!
