Title: How can some dogs detect an epileptic fit?

Kim Lynch  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris,

On a recent podcast (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) talking about dogs and their ability to sense when people are having epileptic fits it was said that this was more hearsay.

I am not an expert in this area but I have seen Nova shows and read articles that seem pretty clear cut that certain dogs are quite capable and reliable it announcing an epileptic attack. They seem to think that it might be the keen sense of smell that allows the dog to notice changes in the individual preceding an attack.

I would like to know if you have any more thoughts on this? I listen to your show driving to work and enjoy it.

Love Kat's voice. Keep up the good work.
