Title: Discussion on spams, ad posts, and other bad user-generated content.
Post by: Tomassci on 30/06/2018 10:39:53
Hi All. Someone named "mathew123" posts to all categories his ad to some thing of cannabis oil, that "cures cancer". I think that all these posts should be destroyed and if mathew123 would continue to post this type of thing, ban him.

P.S. thanks to all active moderators for keeping this forum clean.

I was thinking of a possible measure to help cull the spam on here. There seems to be a recent outbreak of new users posting over a dozen new topics at a time filled with nonsensical messages. Perhaps it would be possible to reprogram the discussion board to limit the number of threads that a new user can create per day until they reach a certain post count?

Thanks for suggestion. Having just removed over 100 and banned 3 users, they are a pain.
It’s being looked at by @chris at moment,  but they use their posting limit & create a new user or work in pairs. This morning I caught them in the act.

You could try programming your forum software to  auto boot members when the system recognizes repeat posts .  Boot out and lock out , they will have to set up a new account just to post a two post maximum. Give the software some AI by programming this .

Another way , you could put a time delay on posts, meaning a 5 minute wait before a second post can be made. This would annoy them and they wouldn't bother then.  leave the editing option though.  A 5 minute delay would also stop serial  posters , ''calm'' things down all over.

Aha!...Very Good Job Colin!
👍

Here is an appreciatory gift.

(be nice n share those sugar candies with the other Mods)

P.S. - on second thought spammers are a bit dullishly entertaining, just like when watching a long documentary on YouTube those ads pop-up, gives an individual a short time break to quickly ' grab that shovel ' n dig into the nose or put on wolverine gloves n unleash a ' shock & awe ' scratchy campaign on that ass itch.

hi, kinda late with an into, since I've already posted a few comments...but i'd like to thank the forum admins for hosting such an interesting forum.

i am wondering if there is a topic for humorous stories, jokes or other non-scientific posts. i don't want to disrupt the quality of subjects being discussed; but perhaps a spot for the occasional "water cooler" joke?

"Just Chat" would be a suitable place.
But in keeping with the forum, try to make them science or technology-related (there are plenty of non-science joke sites!).

Something like "Two electrons walked into a bar..."

It's fine; that sort of levity is a welcome break from some of the heavier interactions here. Just Chat is intended as the place for this.

There are a lot like this, phone bills, tax rebates, etc
Always worth checking the source - this one is obviously not from tv licensing - I never click links on things like this.
