Title: moles of a formula
Post by: nickyj05 on 06/02/2008 03:20:14
I need help with this problem:
The molecular formula of allicin is C(8)H(10)OS(2).

(a) How many moles o allicin are present in 5.00 mg of this substance?
(b) How many molecules of allicin are in 5.00 mg of this substance?
(c) How many S atoms are present in 5.00 mg of allicin?

There is a thread that goes into explaining what a mole is, and how to calculate with them: http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=12443.0

So, essentially, you just need to look up the atomic weights of the constituent atoms, add them up to find the molecular weight of the molecule, from that you know how much 1 mole of the molecule weighs, so you can work out what fraction of a mole amounts to 5mg.

I am assuming this is some sort of school homework.
