Title: break your habit - are alternatives the way to go?
Post by: Rockey on 03/07/2011 05:10:12
The Old ones are being banned across the world because of the harm they are doing. With e-cigs you can go back to the way it was! keep smoking! Why subject yourself to all those cancer causing chemicals for a habit you don’t have to break? Make the switch today! You won’t regret The Spam Cigarrette! Spam-Cigarettes. We Also Deliver to Canada. We have the Spam-cigerettes atomizer no tobacco.

This spam raises an interesting question which Clifford highlighted below - is it good to substitute one addiction for another; even if that other seems less dangerous with current knowledge

Pretty close to SPAM...  but perhaps this should fall under technology.

I realize that smoking is a hard habit to break.  The best way is never to start.

I'm not sure that electronic cigarettes is the way to go...  it seems to me as if that is just substituting one form of smoking (albeit cleaner) for another.

I'd encourage trying to work together with your social group to quit together.  And, then perhaps try something like Zyban/Wellbutrin with the goal of quitting completely.

Cliff - I think the first post was Spam.  Your advise above is good but I think the primary purpose of OP is to create alternative addiction and make money from that substitute.

Well, if it doesn't contain nicotine or something that mimics it then it won't work. If it does contain nicotine or something similar then it's toxic and should be avoided.

I see Wikipedia even has a page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_cigarette

I assume you can put in whatever you wish...  Nicotine solution, Cannabis, etc.

The problem that I see is that it maintains the oral component of smoking.  So, instead of moving towards quitting, one maintains the activities of smoking, and thus it is likely easier to slide back into cigarettes.

Although, perhaps one can get rid of some things like a loss of the sense of smell...  and choose that as a permanent solution.

I've also noticed in business environments that smoking is often very social.  So, either everyone in the social group must quit, or the attempt by an individual might be difficult.  So, perhaps this would allow one to maintain the social contacts without filling one's lungs with tar.

Probably this type of initiative is supported by the nicotine industry, as it subverts people away from solutions that actually work, like cold turkey. The same kind of skepticism can be directed toward "green" cars or "just say no" campaigns which support the very profitable status quo while pretending to be solutions.

part of the habit is psychological& I seen many peeps wearing patches & still smoking
peeps use humidifiers for sore throats, chest colds, etc.
heres the ticket= use the e-cig with lesser amounts of nicotine so to weam off & eventually inhaling only steam then when u get a cold u dont need a humidifier?

Kicking the habit is not quite as easy as these manufacturers of substitutes like to make out.

I have used inhalers to (supposedly) deal with the craving for nicotine and satisfy that strange urge to hold a ciggy and puff on it.

While it may work for some, it didn't for me.

I agree with Clifford, the best course is never to take up the evil weed in the first place.

In my opinion the easiest way to stop smoking, is to stop smoking. It really doesnt get any simpler than that. I find all these elaborate 'quit smoking regimes' that tip-toe around actually quitting smoking altogether, ridiculous. if your are really that intent on breaking the habit, break the habit. I understand fully that you will have quite severe withdrawal symptoms but these are not ever lasting. break the 3 day barrier and it is scientifically proven that withdrawal symptoms are drastically reduced. All it comes down to at the end of the day is having a bit of will power and perseverance.

Re: Rockey the spam-meister who started this thread.

This has prompted a healthy discussion about a topic that many of us had seen advertised.  Unfortunately it has provided some publicity (good or bad) for products that are using inappropriate marketing techniques.

Hopefully, people who are interested will notice that there are many potential methods to use for quitting smoking.

Personally I have started drinking Decaf Coffee recently, and perhaps that will help me resist going back to drinking regular coffee.  However, I'm still not convinced that "Decaf Cigarettes" would be the way to go if I smoked.   [xx(]

heard that smoking had a correlation with no breastfeed as baby so maybe a binky would be the way to go?
