Just Chat! / An idea that I came up with
« on: 28/01/2009 01:32:24 »
My mind was wandering the other day when this idea hit me.

"It's not just what you are thinking about, it's what you could be thinking about."

It makes sense, I mean thought, when you have the time for it, can be very productive or superfluous.
for example, It's not wrong to think about what I would do if I hit the lottery, but it would be more productive to think about the best way to save money.
Just a thing to think about.

I figured that this would be the appropriate place for this thread, since it's purely philosophical.

New Theories / Re: Oregon vortex house and the odd effect (Is there a scientific explainaion?)
« on: 05/12/2008 02:48:08 »
Why doesn't an unbiased party just take a digital laser level to the floor of the house and find out whether the house is really crooked or not?

Besides, even if the gravity in an area was a different direction than conventional gravity, it wouldn't make sense to build a house tilted against gravity.

That CAN'T be true! / Could there be an intelligent designer?
« on: 29/10/2008 15:16:44 »
Indeed much evidence supports evolution via natural selection.  However, the evidence also supports ID if one so chooses to agree with the theory.
Calling the debate of evolution and ID closed without even the mention and discussion of problems such as: "why are the fundamental laws of nature the way they are?" or "Where did the information of DNA or even atomic structure come from?"

Both can be explained by ID (an omnipotent creator) and evolution (anthropic principle, natural selection).

ID and Natural Selection are, in the least, at odds.

That CAN'T be true! / Peanut Butter Disproves Evolution

That proves it.

Peanutbutter owned evolution, single handedly.

Chemistry / What happens to ice when it can't expand?
« on: 23/09/2008 22:30:30 »
Thanks Doctor,

I see, it's not that when water freezes it's an unstopable force and it freezes no matter what.  Just that, if water is at the proper pressure, it will freeze at 32 F.

Technology / Do magnets on car fuel lines affect engine running and efficiency?
« on: 22/09/2008 00:35:43 »
The Mythbusters tested one of the devices on the internet that used a magnet around the gas tube.  The myth was BUSTED, showing no improvement in gas mileage.

That CAN'T be true! / Proof of giant space spider UFOs
« on: 22/09/2008 00:25:39 »
If UFOs are really spiders then, considering my arachnophobia, I'm going to move into a cave with a five inch thick blast door!

That CAN'T be true! / Is there any relationship between what you say and the diseases you suffer?
« on: 22/09/2008 00:16:24 »
I know that if your really stressed out and you say things that keep you stressed or depressed, then your immmune system will be weakened.

Chemistry / What happens to ice when it can't expand?
« on: 21/09/2008 23:51:16 »
I didn't know exactly where to put this, so I put it in the chemistry section because it is a question concerning matter.

Alright, everyone knows that water expands when it is frozen (about 8% of its original volume), but what happens to water if it can't expand?

Let's say that water is put into a metal sphere that is indestructible and the whole thing is put onto dry ice.  Will the water freeze inside the vessel?  Also, if it doesn't, then at what temperature will it freeze?

That CAN'T be true! / Is Astral Projection reality or fantasy?
« on: 30/08/2008 02:06:52 »
Bored Chemist,

A) I was agreeing with you (I was just unclear), because even though the show came to that conclusion, I'm still not convinced.

B) The methods used for remote viewing are open to 'Subjective Validation,' which can render the evidence inacurate.

That CAN'T be true! / The dumbening...
« on: 04/08/2008 05:58:27 »
For the most part, I don't see teenagers (or most that I am friends with) bristling with broad knowledge and interest in things of scientific or practical nature, anywhere beyond the available features of the newest gaming console.

However, I don't think that teenagers are collectively dumber.  In general, education in America is very extensive and diversified and many young minds are breaking ground in areas such as robotics and technology, that I believe will benefit us all.  Such willingness for adapting to and creating change for the better (such as renewable resources) is (I believe) a characteristic that is auspicious for a more creative and successful future.

That CAN'T be true! / Is Astral Projection reality or fantasy?
« on: 04/08/2008 04:35:20 »
Bored chemist,

First of all, the Stargate project was dropped, that should tell us something right there.

One explanation is that remote viewing is not precise enough to conquer the world.  Usually the readings vary from 5-15% above chance.  In the CIA, the method was used as a last resort, to provide intelligence where there was none.

The Environment / What good does a wave do for the ocean?
« on: 04/08/2008 03:50:40 »
Chris,

Good point about the sediments, I didn't think about that aspect.  Without wave motion the waters would probably be too stagnant to really feed an ecosystem as large as the ocean.

Technology / Would this perpetual motion machine work?
« on: 29/07/2008 21:19:23 »
I've heard about the 'Orbo' on sites like PESWiki.  The page is quite complete, including a patent abstract.

I think that it is just a marketing tactic to get recognized.

That CAN'T be true! / Is Astral Projection reality or fantasy?
« on: 29/07/2008 21:07:38 »
I watched a show (relatively recently) on the History Channel called "Wierd U.S." and one of the segments in the episode explored remote viewing.  The show stated that the CIA used remote viewing to identify a new russian submarine before satelites were arround.

The Wierd U.S. team hooked up with the ex-remote viewer to test his ability.  Through a controled scientific experiment, one of the members of the team was coached to use remote viewing.

The team proved that remote viewing is a natural ability that almost everyone has, but do not know how to really use.

That CAN'T be true! / If you put a near-death person in a sealed glass box, will the glass box explode, the soul trying to
« on: 29/07/2008 20:58:34 »
I agree, the soul acts on a different plane of existance, with no material density.  Therefore, it would be quite easy for something with no material density to pass through a solid object.  Some people who believe in ghosts and things from 'the other side' say that ghosts just pass through walls.
However, it's hard enough to prove the existance of such things as it is.

The Environment / What good does a wave do for the ocean?
« on: 29/07/2008 20:32:33 »
One day when I was at the beach I wondered what purpose waves might have in the ocean.  Because almost everything in this world benefits someone or thing in some way, if you look at it in enough depth.

A few ideas I had were:
     1. Maybe the churning of the waves oxidizes the water for the fish, kind of like an aerator for a fish tank.  Also, maybe the foam on the water (which I think is a hardened protein from fish waste) helps to clean out the water.

New Theories / bees
« on: 27/07/2008 20:41:14 »
Colony Collapse Disorder is causing a problem already and will probably get worse.  If global food supply weakens it could be disastrous.

Unless someone designs flower seeking robotic bees, with ultraviolet vision (the way bees can see flowers).  Considering how there is a trumpet playing robot and even a robot that can carry on a conversation, hopefully robotic bees might not be far off. [:-\]

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Newtonian mechanics, Work from centripetal acceleration?
« on: 27/07/2008 01:08:57 »
Wow, thanks Sophiecentaur and graham. d for clearing all this up for me.  I see now that when r increases the kinetic energy is lower, but the angular momentum remains the same!  So, just like the person on the office chair pulling in their arms, the rpms change but total energy stays the same.  The person can keep changing the weight, but only the rpm's change.

Major Kudos on the mathematical proof for the true work done by the weight, I appreciate it.
