Just Chat! / Best oil for frying "fish n chips"?
« on: 29/06/2022 23:42:36 »
I prefer my fish grilled and especially on tacos, but what do the best "fish n chip" chefs in the UK fry them in? Are they typically fried in the same type of oil? Fried fish is popular in Upstate New York where I grew up, because Haddock is plentiful in our lakes, especially Oneida, where the family camp has been located since the 1920s. During the war, my great-grandfather managed to include preserved haddock in the care packages he sent to my grandfather and his brothers overseas.
Anyways, our fried fish and french fries (chips to you guys) are usually cooked deep in canola oil.

Just Chat! / Occam's razor, what most likely happened to Amelia Earhart?

Is what caused her twin-engine Lockheed Electra to crash most likely bad navigation when negotiating the unpredictable ocean waters? Aviation was still in its infancy in 1937.

Just Chat! / Should a person be allowed to bring their own vending machine to a hotel?
« on: 20/06/2022 23:32:09 »
I worked at a hotel during college and I recall a guest asking if they could bring their own soda machine with them. Our reply was to the effect of "we have vending machines at the hotel already (candy, soda, detergent, etc.) and it is really unnecessary to drag your 1300-pound machine onto our premises." Apparently one of the reasons our founding fathers fought the American Revolution was so people could have the right to bring their vending machines wherever they go. At least that was his understanding, so he sued.

Just Chat! / What can be done to improve the dire conditions in Nepal?
« on: 18/06/2022 12:01:59 »
It seems like money comes to the average Nepalese in two forms: RAF pensions and when foreigners request their services when pilgrimaging K-2 and Mount Everest. When the topic is brought up with government officials in interviews for example, it gets shut down and they leave the room.

Just Chat! / Re: "Let's talk"

It's an unusual use of the first person plural. When a politician says "we" he means "you", because as every Tory knows, politicians are above the law. But when a female significant other says "we need to talk" she means "I need to talk and you need to grovel."

Still, it's a useful cinematic cliche, along with "he has a right to know", "I must take this call", and "we mustn't involve the police", without which the plot would resemble the emperor's new clothes after a moth attack.
Alancalv, when your wife says those four words, what goes through your mind?

Just Chat! / "Let's talk"
« on: 06/06/2022 22:56:53 »
When your boss, wife or girlfriend says "we need to talk", is there ever anything positive for yourself to come of it? It seems like whenever a "talk" is requested, it's because the requestee is doing something the requester is unhappy with.

Also why is "artistic genius" so exclusive? I have seen many works of art by artists that are cheap yet people pay gazillions for a Jackson pollock?
Two dead, overhyped American artists worshiped in the UK: Buckminster Fuller and Jackson Pollock.

There's a rumor that the Brits loved Fuller so much, that he was hired to create the design for the modern British toilet. If true, I can imagine some were offended by this, believing the British toilet should be designed by a proper, Queen-fearing Brit.

Just Chat! / Why do we equate oversized glasses with artistic genius?
« on: 02/06/2022 13:43:30 »
Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, along with the now-dead Charles Nelson Reilly, Peter Bogdanovich, Barry Cryer, etc., were/are artists that sport/sported oversized glasses. We will look at them and will determine them to be geniuses of the arts because of their oversized glasses. We don't even have to examine their content because we feel their oversized glasses tell us enough.

Being that the UK still has a monarchy, a brit can hardly pass judgment on the failings of our democracy.
What do you think the Queen actually does?
Waves.

It seems to be the one thing people are 100% consistent on. Always has been this way. My grandmother was Camel, both my grandfathers were Lucky Strikes, getting hooked on them during the war.

Just Chat! / Initials grammar...
« on: 15/05/2022 13:56:41 »
There is a passionate, poignant debate in English-speaking countries as to the correct way to write/space someone's initials. For example, should William Claude Fields's first and middle initials be "W. C. Fields", "W.C. Fields", "WC Fields" or "W C Fields"?

Just Chat! / Too much faith in computers/A.I.?
« on: 10/05/2022 19:12:54 »
In many futuristic works, there will be a sophisticated computer that can answer almost any question posited to them. For example, throughout the Star Trek shows, movies, etc, you'll see one of the characters asking for facts on a particular issue.
Picard: Computer, what is the predominant material in Dyson Spheres?
Computer: Hematite.
Picard: Thank you.

Here's the problem with that: no one ever seemes to ever ask the computer where it gets its facts. When we in the real world ask fact-finding questions to our virtual assistants (Alexa, Echo, etc,), they say where they sourced the answer.
