Title: How do I make a solution of zinc chloride?
Post by: kr236rk on 30/06/2016 14:16:28
Hi,

I have crystals of Zinc Chloride. How do I render these crystals into solution please?

I need a solution of ZnCl for processing photographs.

Many thanks,

KR

Zinc chloride is quite soluble in water, so this shouldn't be very difficult.

1) Figure out what concentration the final solution needs to be, and how much you want to make.

2) Weigh out the correct amount of zinc chloride and add the desired amount of water (presumably distilled or deionized).

3) Stir until the zinc chloride is completely dissolved. Mild heating might speed the process along, but isn't required. If the crystals are very large, this might slow the dissolution down, so it might be advisable to crush or grind them.

4) If the concentration needs to be very precise, make a solution that is more concentrated than needed, and dilute it to the proper volume (much easier than making something too dilute and concentrating it)

Good luck!

Thanks Chiral,

I need to experiment, have just ordered a sensitive set of scales so that's okay. Yes, it would be distilled water. I understand that I can also filter the result if there is any residue?

Bests,

Ric
