Interesting.

I wonder how 2,3-butanedione compares to DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), or perhaps a combination of the two. 

The 2,3-butanedione sounds like a great "natural product".  However, I do see some safety concerns, at least in a few situations.
