Title: Is it Just Vocal Cords that determine Voice ?
Post by: neilep on 14/12/2007 15:52:54
Dear Experienced Voice Users !

See this picture of Vocal Cords ?

Nice eh ?......I can vouch that wifeys work perfectly *le sigh*

Say I was to transplant wifeys vocal cords with mine....would I sound like her and her like me ?...or is the nature of voice far more complex than that ?......and if so....I would assume the vocal cords to play the majority of the role towards the tone of the voice yes ?

Hope ewe all noticed that I did not debase myself by saying that the piccy might look like something else....something I would never do !! .......DOH !!

The vocal cords only create noise - it is the shape of the mouth that filters particular sounds from that noise.

The vocal cords will change the overall colour of that noise, which is where the difference between a post-pubic male voice differs from a pre-pubic male or female voice; but it does not produce the detail of the voice (the distinct sounds of words).  If you changed vocal cords with your wife, you could sound like a castrato - adult male mouth shape, but with the tight vocal cords of a pre-pubescent male.
