How does a cylindrical bagless vacuum cleaner work ? one advantage and one disadvantage of using a bagless vacuum clearner.

If you go to council recycling depot you will see lots of bagless vacuum cleaners that have been dumped it would seem that they either have a short life or their buyers are just dissatisfied with them.
The answer would seem to be that they don't

Most use the principle of cyclonic separation, where a miniature spinning tornado separates dust from the air, requiring little or no filtration. Because a vortex of a certain size is best at removing dust down to a certain size, sometimes multiple stages of vortex are used to remove a wider range of dust particle sizes.

Do they really ? I thought dyson had fought lots of patent claims about this. I thought bagless where just vacuum cleaners that utilised filters ? Paper bags are far superior as you do not have to clean the filter, just throw it away.

I do not understand how dyson gained a patent for it, the idea of cyclonic seperation, he admits himself he got from a sawmill air filter, so this would be obvious would it not, or a copy? Trouble with dysons vacuums is they are power hungry and where very heavy.

Bagged vacuum cleaners require that you change the bag when it becomes full. Replacing the bag isn't a huge chore and most vacuum cleaner bags are not expensive, though it may be inconvenient to have to remember to check if the bag is full. Some models requiring vacuum cleaner bags now have an indicator light that will let you know when the bag needs to be changed. A benefit of vacuum cleaner bags is that there is not a lot of contact with the dust and debris in the bag. Slip out the old bag and throw it away.

I've been through three bagless vacuums in recent years - they definitely seem to break down more easily.  Back to a good old fashioned one for me.  Dyson did have a pretty interesting interview on NPR's How I Built This, though.

I have a Bagless vacuum cleaner, as the name suggests, don't use a replaceable bag that collects the dust and dirt from the surface. A bagless vacuum cleaning machine is compact and uses a dust cup or chamber to store the dust and dirt. The dust cup used in the vacuum cleaner can be easily emptied and cleaned.

We bought a dyson about 10years ago. About six months ago my wife complained that it wasn't functioning well and she wanted a new one. I put her off for a while promising to have a look at, like what can go wrong with a vacuum cleaner?. Push turned to shove and I said just give me a couple of hours and if I can't improve suction i'll buy you a new one. I whipped it apart to find a filter clogged with dirt. As I cleaned years of dirt off this filter writing became visible which said "clean every 6months"! or words to that effect. After a thorough cleaning the machine now works as new.
