Email from the Tortoise Protection Group:
Working with other UK & German animal welfare organisations, the
Tortoise Protection Group were asked to send a representative along to
the Hamm Reptile Fair in March of this year, to view & report on the
conditions at these fairs. The following videos include footage taken
at the fairs which some may find disturbing. The content of the videos
speak for themselves.
It has been reported on other forums that a number of the animals
purchased at the last two fairs died before they even reached the UK.

My response on the TPG Forum:
While I found these two videos disturbing, I have to say I did not find them at all surprising. The conditions were precisely as I would have expected to find them for such an event. As I pointed out in a previous post on this and other sites, as an exhibition contractor, I do not approve of such events because of the conditions to be found at such venues. I would also like to reiterate that the ‘behind the scenes’ conditions relating to the logistics of such an event, which these videos cannot show, would be wholly unacceptable and inappropriate for such animals and would carry a high risk factor.
The obvious distress of many of the animals apparent in these videos would have been noticeable from the moment they were ‘packed up’ like the commodities they were being treated as and would have continued throughout their ordeal. The fact that some of these animals did not survive is of no surprise to me. The question is, how many which were not sold did not survive the journey back to from whence they came, or were deemed to be too expensive to transport back and were otherwise disposed of? Not an unusual practice among exhibitors at any event.
This event is a gross injustice to animals and to animal lovers. I have seen fruit and veg afforded more care and respect on market stalls than was evident here.
Do you not agree that this is a damning indictment of mans' attitude to his fellow creatures? Is not especially more so, considering these people are supposed to be animal lovers?

The Tortoise Protection Group, Tortoise Trust and myself remain wholly against these fairs.
Those who attend them should be considered as animal collectors, interested only in the size and scope of their collections, not in the welfare of the animals.
