LOL.. I have had that happen on my big computer and its not even vista.. but consequentially the monitor quit..working properly when waking and I could not get it to do anything else. It lit up and there was power but the screen froze on a blank like you described.. the odd thing was that it would not show the computer out of sleep mode and It stayed that way.. It only happened with that mode.. I had to reboot cold and then when I was able to get the screen up I had to stop using the hibernate mode as it did not work right at all! It did not wake up! I used it like that, for a long time then replaced the monitor and have not had that trouble since then.

Thanks Kareny Mam for your support.

Something strange also happened last night...

The computer would not shut down at all !!....going to the ' shut down ' mode did nothing...nor did pushing the on/off button (whch is also set to act as a shut down procedure short cut)...

The only way to actually turn the computer off last night was to keep the on/off button pressed in until the PC just lost power. I then rebooted after a short while and was able to shut down normally.

weird eh ?

I was a service technician in an earlier existence, and I saw more equipment that was faulty than OK, I am actually still rather surprised when I find things that work.

LOL! I know what you mean. Perhaps people imagine all the engineers beavering away to design these wonderful things. In reality, the engineers are beavering away alright, but they spend most of their time trying to figure out why the heck it does not do what they thought it would do. And that's assuming somebody bothered to define a test for that situation.

Things tend to work, not based on the quality of the design, but more on the quality of the testing. Problem is, no amount of testing will eliminate all the problems. As they say, garbage in, garbage out.

Vista does not shutdown...
if the problem is a recurring one, its most likely to be one of the following reasons:
3) One of your processes or services is not shutting down.
4) You have a faulty or incompatible device driver installed.
5) You have a faulty or incompatible program running.

I've had a similar problem with Vista, the computer would start up again immediately after being switched off.
In my case it was a dodgey driver, the driver was causing the computer to look for a non-existant peripheral device and it would not rest until it had found it.  [ The above site is very good for windows info ].
