Привет,
I tried to study a little Russian on my own a few years ago, but I must admit that I was still struggling with the alphabet. Fortunately there are many similarities between the Cyrillic and Greek alphabets, so with effort, I could sound out many words. The problem is that with math and science, one learns the names of the Greek letters, but not their sounds.
One of my favorite words was simply.... ПАРК.... which is easy once one finds the similarities with the Greek pi (π) and rho(ρ), it just doesn't look like what one would expect.
Anyway, your written English appears to be excellent.

Many English and Russian words a similar. They have a Latin roots, so to learn new wolds for native speakers one of thous languages it's not a big trouble. For example you can learn words transcriptions: water - VODA - ВОДА. Trifle.
Many magazines and books published in USA or England so much perfect, that most Russian books steal many information with ugly translations. So many Russian people must to learn English.
But in our libraries many books, old and strong minded books, that you will be confused. And I think no much people on this site have read Russian book. They a worth to learn Russian.
