Title: What causes ringing in the ears?

I am wondering if you can help me out regarding ringing in the ears.  I have had all of a sudden this ringing in my ears for the last few months.  I am 63 years old and it is driving me mad.  Would you know what the cause is, is there an under lying problem and is there a way to stop this.  Also is it true that if one member of the family has died from cancer of the oesophagus that it is genetic and will be passed on?  I appreciate your help and look forward to hearing from you.

Tinnitus is a term for ringing in the ears. 

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus) has a good list of possible causes.  I think shingles might also be added to the list, as well as a number of other factors.  Have you discussed the issue with your physician?

As far as cancer.

Cancer of the esophagus is often related to toxins including either smoking or chewing tobacco.  However, it may also occur without obvious predisposing factors.

A close family member having cancer may indicate a genetic predisposition to getting cancer of any type, and not just esophageal cancer.
