I bet he pi**ed off the local temperance movement though.

Religions tend to borrow (or steal) a lot of ideas from prior religions. 

If you watch the Zeitgeist movie (which used to be a free download, but now seems to be flash, or commercialized).  Anyway, it presented the idea that Christ was actually the god of the Age of Pisces, with the so called birth date corresponding to the beginning of the age.  The birthday also corresponds with the rebirth of the sun after the winter solstice.
