Title: Naked Sci episode that featured Paranal (VLT) observatory
Post by: solarblast on 13/03/2011 18:52:58
I'd swear that I made a DVD from the Subject episode from our DirecTV setup, but have no idea what the episode or name of it was.

Anyone know if it will be reshown or can be seen on the web?

I don't think so. I'm looking for a one hour video that was broadcast in the last 2-4 years. Paranal or VLT were not in the title, but, when it began, there was no doubt where the majority of views and discussions were about.

If you made a DVD, I'm assuming it was the American television programme "Naked Science", and not the British radio programme & podcast "The Naked Scientists".  As we're the forum for the latter, I doubt people here will be able to help much!

There is a 'Naked Science' DVD available on the BTJunkie file sharing network, it might just be prostitutes prancing about in lab coats but I won't know until it downloads !!

Yes. American TV. It's a regular series on National Geographic Channel (NGC). Maybe twice a week, and it dates back probably to 2005 or earlier. I captured from DirecTV. Sort of Tivo like feature, and then easily made a copy with my DVR. Sure wish I knew what I did with it. The title is not VLT or Paranal.

BTW, the VLT and Paranal are in Chile. Wikipedia shows all the episodes.

So is this a British Forum? I thought I got here through NGC.

If you enter NatGeo into a file sharing network (BTJunkie) it comes up with about 50 episodes, I am downloading 'Inside the milky way' it seem a likely candidate.

I have a feeling you are right. I do happen to have that one on the DVR.  I'll look a little later.

Nope. I'll be back in a few hours. Inside ... is excellent though.

BTW, what is a file sharing network? A group of people who pass documentaries around? Cambridge, as in Mass.?

I'm glad you brought up Inside. I need to save it to DVD. Definitely a keeper.

As an Oxonian I find "Cambridge, as in Mass.?" rather funny.

Oxonian? Is that a cross between an OXO cube and an onion?

Massachusetts=Mass, USA, but I see your humor, which indicates  to me this is a British based forum.

The Australian link could be it, but it did not go by that name on NGC. Didn't know about a channel 610. I'll see if I get it on my DirecTV (USA).

Of the 128 episodes of Naked Science, I see four that may be it. Unfortunately, no content accompanies the titles. How would I find out if it becomes available on "sharing files"?

Solarburst

Look to Google and download the basic file sharing program 'Vuze' then open

http://btjunkie.org/search which will show you what is available from 'NatGeo'

Happy hunting (beware virus's Trojans etc always run antivirus check such as 'Exterminate' if in any doubt).

I'm pretty sure Paranal is the title, but so is "Eye on the Universe".

Well, well.  I thought I'd Google again, and may have found it at <http://documentarystorm.com/eye-on-the-universe/>. Unfortunately, the site seems to be in an infinite loop. The descriptions shows.
I may need to heed there advice in the first sentence.

Imagine looking up into the night sky and seeing so clearly you could spot an astronaut walking on the moon.
Imagine peering back to the beginning of time and seeing stars form before your very eyes or black holes in galaxies billion of light years away.
Imagine being able to look into other solar systems and finding Earth like planets that hold the possibility of life.

An eye this powerful is being built right now in the deserts of chile: The V.L.T., or Very Large Telescope. With its four separate telescopes acting as one giant eye, the V.L.T. will be the most powerful telescope array on Earth. By the time it is fully operational, it will have cost a half a billion dollars and 20 years will have passed since it was first conceived.

The most powerful tool for unlocking the secrets of the cosmos: This is the Eye on the Universe

Oddly, I could not post the larger response, since the preceding reply was over 120 days old, so I tried a quick reply. That worked to allow me to post the larger reply.
