Title: motion sick
Post by: jojo on 01/11/2003 06:16:10
hey there everyone (doctors in particular) :)
ok so here's my problem.. i get dizzy, nauseated and tired when im exposed to to much motion.. eg car, plane turbulance, rollercoasters, and it doesnt take a lot either. here's the thing, my ears r pretty sensitive to sounds such as when i play my drums, when i clear the dishwasher, or eat really crunchy chips, also i get relatively a lot of wax in them. i was jst wonderin if there is something wrong with my ears(something in the middle ear maybe?) causing my motion intolerance?
tnx :)

Hi Jojo, welcome to the forum.

Firstly my sympathy for your problems, it must be very unpleasant. Fortunately you are not alone, unfortunately these problems are very often something you have to deal with because there is no magic cure.

Motion sickness is very common and there are some specific conditions, like menieres disease, that can aggravate it, but since this is (I assume) a long-standing problem with you, it is unlikely to be down to one of those. There are a number of relatively effective drugs available these days including non-sedating antihistamines like cyclizine, and other agents like and prochlorperazine.

Your ears are clearly working okay because you complain that you are over sensitive to some sounds - I'd be more worried if you said the opposite - that your hearing is poor or getting worse.

Ear wax is the normal product of a healthy ear. But some people produce a bit too much, and some people compound the problem by shoving things like cotton buds into their ears in the belief that they are helping to clean their ears out. Actually it has the opposite effect and helps to jam the wax harder down your ear canal like a ramrod down a cannon. It should be avoided at all costs. Put olive oil down your ears to loosen the thick wax and then have a hot bath and it should float out. Syringing to flush it out is the next step. Excessive ear wax can affect hearing, but usually people complain of deafness rather than over-sensitive ears.

Welcome Jojo,

Here are a few things you can try:
Five charcoal tablets one hour before traveling.
Two (1000 mg) ginger capsules one hour before and every three hours while traveling.
Magnesium (500 mg) one hour before trip.
Vitamin B6 (100 mg) one hour before leaving.
Peppermint tea or a drop of (edible) peppermint oil on the tongue.

Let us know what works for you.  Regarding your ears, I put peroxide in my ears to clean them.  It bubbles and tickles when you put it in, and when it stops bubbling I drain and dry.

Donnah,
Someone once told me that Hydrogen Peroxide was outlawed and not available in Canada. Apparently not. Or, you've got some black market bootlegging going on. What's the story behind that....if any?

Hydrogen peroxide is Drain-O and hair-bleacher.

Who in the world told you that?  I was told not to use hydrogen peroxide in the ear in case there was a small hole in the tympanic membrane (eardrum), and the peroxide could get behind it and cause problems, infection, etc.

Bezoar, maybe that's what happened to me!  What about olive oil in the ear then?

Ron, whoever told you the story about peroxide in Canada was telling you just that; a story.

Olive oil should be OK, as long as you don't heat it enough to scald your eardrum.  Should be viscous enough not to run into small perforations in the membrane.

Anyway, you shouldn't be using blackmarket products!

I've found that a meal with four or five fresh Jalapeno peppers helps clear my ears (and everything else) for a couple of hours.  If it's not mealtime, just two or three peppers by themselves can do the trick.  Stay away from the pickled ones - the vinegar dilutes them too much. [:)]

Motion sickeness is just your ears and eyes getting confused, as long as they sense the same things you won't get motion sick. Prevention is better than cure ... (Don't read books, look at what's happening outside the car so your eyes see the same as your ears feel)

Am I dead? Am I alive? I'm both!

Hydrogen peroxide is bad enough, but I really wouldn't recommend eating with your ears or shoving jalapeno peppers into them.

What did you say George?  I can't hear past the jalapenos.

Somebody had to say it.

I haven't tried them directly in the ears.  I usually stay with the more conventional route of through the mouth.  Though a little juice rubbed in the eyes can be rather exciting for a few minutes (can really make you appreciate less painful things like slamming your fingers in the car door).

I once helped a girlfriend make stuffed jalapenos for a party. We were cutting them and digging out the center. It had been a few minutes and I had to pee. Well, I can tell you, all of my senses were in high gear right then. I had to second guess myself before wiping the tears from my eyes.
