Lekale asked the Naked Scientists:
What exactly are womens' "periods"? What's actually happening when a woman is on her periods?

The period occurs roughly once every 28 days when the smooth muscle of some of the arteries in the endometrium go into spasm, this cuts off the blood supply to these muscles. As a result, most of the endometrium dies and comes away as blood and dead cells.
