Post by: Defij on 20/11/2003 16:32:28
hey i just wanted to get your veiws on cloning and see the differences. Of course theres a reason for this, i have to write an essay on cloning and i would apreciate your veiws on this topic. if you could please email all info (if you chose to help me) to this email: crazed_lone_wolf@hotmail.com
thank you for your help and i will be forever grateful

I'd like to clone myself. Then I could go to work and stay home at the same time................Seriously though, I'm not familiar enough with the technology to fully understand the benefits that could be realized from cloning. But generally speaking, I'm not in favor of cloning humans, if that's even possible at the moment. Speaking of which, what ever became of the claims made by Klone-Aid (don't recall their exact name)?

I think cloning is human trying to play god. Yes it may have some benifits and can save some lives but I just think that it's unnatual. I don't have any moral issue against it, but the world is over populated as it is and we are still trying to increase the number of human?? (It's quite strange I'm saying this, I'm trying to go on to medicine and I'm talking about not saving people's lives?)

DNA of 50-year human is not the same as DNA at birth. Mistakes (mutations) accumulate, telomeres are shortener etc., so a clone made by  DNA of 50 years old man (I suppose very narcisoid) is 50 years old at birth.

Even if you cloned someone, unless all the experiences are exactly the same the person will be very different when it grows to the same age as the person who donated the genetic material.

Am I dead? Am I alive? I'm both!

Cloning isn't actually about getting another human exactly the same as you; if you clone yourself and get the stem cells from the embryo then things that could not normally be repaired can be...ie the spine. Recent research has allowed paralysed mice able to move again due to stem cell treatment.
Cloning is a technology that will revolutionise medecine and I think it's great we are finally getting somehwere

They still don't know how to make stem cells turn into the particular cells they want. It'll still be a long time, especially with ignorant people voting and making stupid decisions because they don't know what they're talking about.

I think Quantum, what they are trying to do with stem cell is to place it next to a certain type of cell and hope that it will grow. Stem cell,I presume have no cell recognition/antigen (usually glycoprotein or glycolipid), that's why it's blank and hopefully it will grow using the anitgen of the cell adjacent to it.

(Might be rubbish , correct me if I'm wrong)

I think the scientist have the right idea- advancing understanding in order to solve medical problems. Stem cells have potential for that. And I think that the science deserves more credit and funding and less ideological restrictions so that we do not fall behind. I think that it is the injured's need for treatment is what carries this technology and others have no right to deny them what could help them.

What is interesting and sometimes bogus is how far other people take this stuff in other directions. Here are some Ideas:

First with reproductive cloning nature vs. nurture is a very good debate. Nature and nurture in varying degrees ultimately effect the individual's state and behaviors by various factors. If a genius or an exceptional athlete were cloned successfully then all that is known is that the clones hold possible capacity for those roles(similar to everyone else). Traits emerge with time and development. A clone of Einstein may or may not be a promising scientist for some reason like diverted interest or motivation and varied temperament. If a group of geniuses were cloned (the clones would only be possible geniuses before they prove themselves). Who knows what could be done with that kind of centralized brain power? That is a big if (the stuff of sci-fi novels).

Also clones of people that lived over a hundred years might clue in scientists in on genes (or certain genes combined with certain behaviors) that help us live longer. This sounds like a long experiment - comparing their genomes would help.

Concerning clones I think the DNA donor would make a good parental unit. Kind of like a big brother or sister except they happen to look and act like an older twin (twins are known for deviations between thier personalities). I think a strong loving/caring bond would be in place. Of course this is speculation..
