Title: Radio Show
Post by: profetas on 05/11/2004 11:50:26
Hi

I have tried to download the old shows but I couldn't find any portable format.

I normally listen to other shows when I am on the bus etc..

But to listen to thenakedscientists show you must be in you computer and have media player.

Is there any ogg or mp3 version of the shows?

Thanks

At the moment only the previous and present series (2003 to 2004 and 2004- respectively) are available as downloadable MP3 files.

Check out http://tnsstore.caret.cam.ac.uk/audio for access to downloadable versions of these files.

Hey chris- were you on radio 4 or 5 about a week ago? I think you were talking about blue-ray discs and portable data storage!

Hi qpan,

In answer to your question - Yes. On Radio Five Live each Monday morning I do a 10 to 15 minute round up of breaking science news stories.

I think the story you heard was about a new scratch-resistant polymer coating for CDs, DVDs, and mobile phone screens invented by TDK. Sony, Phillips, and Panasonic are interested in it because they are about to launch a new disc called "BluRay" - the successor to the DVD - which will store 25 times more data than a DVD. But the fragility of the discs would have been a problem and may have required the additional use of a 'disc caddy' - a plastic cartridge to hold the disc. Disc caddies are universally abhored within the electronic media world because any new technology that has ever used them has been a  flop.

The new polymer coating helps make discs sufficiently robust to survive without a caddy and hence keeps the market happy too ! Good news for TDK I guess.

This week's stuff was about bacteria in bottled water, a new electronic virus detector, how cells from a developing baby can trespass around the mother's body, possibly helping to heal her, or possibly triggering diseases (!), and also why Greek doctors are advising  you to avoid coffee and fags together !

I'll also be chatting about some of these things on this week's naked scientists show on the BBC Eastern Region, although this week's show is largely devoted to origins - including the origin of life on earth, the origin of the earth, the moon and the sun, and the 5% of our DNA that distinguishes (most) people from chimpanzees.

You can catch up with the previous show (which this week was all about explosives, pyrotechnics and fireworks) via this link :

Bluray is certainly a very exciting new format that has been doing the realms for years now and if they have overcome the fragility then that's well and good.....but it's worth mentioning that the world have only in the last few years started getting used to DVDs and DVD recorders and now in the near future they may well be asked to chuck all that away and buy brand new players/recorders that are capable of reading the new format. Existing players will not be compatible. I can probably see BluRay being more acceptable initially in the computer market and I understand that Sony are about to launch an 8 layer disc which has a 200 gigabyte capacity !!!...and that the Playstation 3 will be BluRay capable.

I just hope it does not go down the same route as Betamax did...and other formats like SACD and DVDA still have to make an impact.

Hi fishytails - unless you are doing a very late lab session you probably won't be in the car when I do the five live slot - because it goes out at about 1.50 AM ! So strictly science for insomniacs and shift workers !

You can, however, listen back using real audio via the bbc website (if you are that keen), or you can have a listen to ABC Radio National breakfast where I do a weekly 'turn' - again you'll need Real for that as I don't anticipate that you'll want to head all the way to Oz just to listen to the radio, although Peter Thompson, who presents RN breakfast is a great listen.

Here's the ABC link - http://www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/brkfast/ - my stuff is live on a Monday morning at about 8.15.

What's the frequency of Radio National in Sydney? I know TripleJ does web streaming, do Radio National?

RN Sydney is 576AM and they definitely stream their content. If you follow the link I placed above and then click on the individual components for the show there is a listen icon - but you do need real player !

For anyone who is an insomniac I'm going to do Dr. Karl's slot for him on Radio Five Live this Thursday morning at 0300-0400. This is live science Q & A on any topic - no nasty questions please !

The show went well with a good variety of questions, including quite a few related to virology, which was nice. Thank you everyone who contributed.

You never know, pehaps they'll give me adecent slot one day so that I don't have to get up at 2.20 in the morning !
