Title: Do dolphins like music?
Post by: Hannah LS on 03/12/2018 16:12:56
Robin asks:

My friend says that dolphins' favourite music genre is trap. I disagree, surely they prefer smooth jazz... Which one of us is correct?

What do you think?

I’ve come across some reports that they like Radiohead, not sure how you would classify their music, I’ve certainly heard some jazz progressions in there. I did read somewhere that they say their music teacher introduced them to jazz, avant-garde music, and modern ‘classical’ music.

I was working with dolphins in one of the Spanish theme-park and can say that some of them LOVE music, my favorite pair of dolphins were enjoyed "I want to break free" Queen, it was funny and amazing

If the dolphins get fed when the music plays their reaction could be Pavlovian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_conditioning#Pavlov's_research), rather than a preference for pop/rock.

Dolphins are able to produce sounds with fundamental frequencies up to 16kHz; their hearing goes well into the ultrasonic, as used for echolocation.

They would probably consider human music as too heavy on the bass notes.

Depends on your definition of music.

Sir Malcolm Sargent was asked if he had conducted any Stockhausen. "No, but I once trod in some."

I suspect dolphins are just as honest in their appraisals.

Are there any shrimp that breed like RCS? That is, their shrimplets are miniature versions of the parents and dont undergo a larval stage?

Im looking for an easy shrimp to start with.

Thats pretty crazy. Sounds like they are still a far way away from translating dolphin language but it would be pretty amazing if we could understand the language of another species.
