Title: Why does my microwave still smell like burned food, days later?
Post by: Carolyn on 06/03/2007 15:13:04
Five days ago, I put a panini in the microwave.  Instead of setting the time for 3:15, I set if for 31:50.  I went outside and forgot it for about 12 minutes.  When I opened up the microwave, ugly yellow smoke billowed out, along with that foul burned smell.

I have scrubbed the microwave with several different cleaners, as well as baking soda and vinegar.  The inside still has the yellow tint of the smoke and the burnt smell is still quite strong.

I've burnt things in the oven, but the smell has never lingered like this, or changed the color.  So why does the smell linger in  the microwave and not in the oven?  And will the smell eventually dissipate or is it trapped in there forever?

Yes indeedy!! You must buy yourself a nice big deep fryer for outside and try it!! It's quicker then the 4 or 5 hours the conventional oven takes and it is very good. Just follow the directions.. LOL!!! I wish I could send you a deep fried freshly cooked Turkey.. You would Love it...Sir!

Your so bad..You need a deep fryer for your Next Birthday or christmas.. You will become a deep fryer man!!! Turkeys are delish in them. They are bulky though.

Carolyn try making a moist paste of baking soda and spread it inside your microwave and allow it to dry inside a bit, then clean it off thouroghly and add an open box of baking soda to the microwave for a couple of days, It will absorb some more odor..

Thanks guys - I tried the water for 10 minutes then scoured it w/ baking soda.  It helped some.  Now I'm doing the water again with baking soda.  If that doesn't do it, then I'll try your other idea Karen.  I suppose if that doesn't work, I'll follow Neils advice and buy a new microwave....

But don't let this mishap fool ya....I'm still an excellent cook.  Last night  was roasted chicken over veggies (potatoes, onions, celery, carrots), and dijon asparagus.  They're still bragging about it today!  Ooohhhhh and tonight, I'm going all out, a real gourmet meal....frozen pizza.

We had a burn mark in our new microwave due to a small metal tie around a package of frozen hamburger rolls. We tried all the products we learned on the internet. Nothing worked. I then remembered the [spam] scratch remover I had bought for a scratch on our car. I followed the directions and it really removed the burn mark and all the discoloration. We were amazed. More information

Whoops, got your fingers burn there. No point trying to cook spam on our site, you end up getting zapped.
