Title: POP ROCKS and DOTS
Post by: Broca on 04/09/2003 03:30:43
The fact that Pop Rock candy has 600 psi of carbon dioxide in each little chunk is very interesting to me. I can not for the life of me figure out how they get it in there though. I also wonder how they make Dots, the ice cream of the future that looks like styrofoam beads.

Broca,

I recently saw a program on the food network, called "Unwrapped" that revealed the secret to "Pop rocks". Here are some insightful links to help. I couldn't remember all the exact details from the show, but this site tells all.

I couldn't figure out the pop rock ice cream until I saw that show. Now it all makes sense.

Thanks for the info. I think dippin dots are awful but kids love them. Way to cold!
You saw this on the food network eh? Did you "kick it up a notch?" :-)

Pop Rocks candy is the coolest. It's truly a scientific breakthrough. They're little candy granules in different flavors that crackle and pop like crazy when you put them in your mouth. There used to be an urban legend floating around that pop rocks and coka cola together, would make you explode internally causing death. Go figure.

Sure you're not thinking of the pigeon and baking soda? that is true, a pigeon cannot belch and thus its stomach would expand and eventually split! [V]

That's true. I once saw some punk kids at the coast throwing Alka-seltzer pieces into the air for the sea gulls to snatch...they popped and dove after a few seconds. Mean but fascinating.

This really was an urban legend about the coke and pop rocks. It was supposedly the kid from the Life cereal box cover that did this and died.

I love urban legends and look at those U.L. web sites sometimes to see what the most current U.L.s are.

Someone should give those punk kids chocolate cupcakes iced with Ex-Lax.

I did put laxative in my husband's wine one time when I was mad at him.  Made me feel a lot better.  Of course, it was very cathartic for him too.

When I was a bartender, I would occasionally get a patron that I wanted to leave. Or, a waitress would complain about some rude drunks in her section. Instead of being forceful, I just carried Visene eye drops with me all the time. (It had other purpose as well...) A few drops into a drink and within a few minutes, it's potty time. Bar soap worked as well, but Visene was faster and undetectable. They usually paid the tab and went home soon after. [}:)]

Remind me not to get you angry with me...[;)]

Ronnie, where was that info when I worked in the bar?  I just made sure that their service was paced for their level of intoxication and/or their manners (which frequently went together).

I tried the Visine eye drops and they didn't work.  Then someone told me that the formula had changed, and that only the old drops worked that way.  Tried those on the ex boyfriend who had a drinking problem.  Thought it might convince him to slow down.  Alas, to no avail.  Had to get rid of the man.  If I'd only had some old Visine...

I'd heard that too. The formula change. I wonder what the old additive was that caused the... umm... Purge? Think I'll research this.

My mom gave her boyfriend (a real punk) some of that Asian tea once. He was CLEAN real quick and she felt better. You women can be pretty awful sometimes.

I used to sell Dippin Dots when I worked at the zoo in St. Louis.  They are made by bubbling liquid nitrogen through the ice cream to flash freeze it into those little beads.  They have to be stored at really cold temperatures or else they'll melt and lose their novelty, hence why you can't just buy them at the grocery store.
