Title: Rock/mineral vase - please help ID it
Post by: relanium on 28/05/2015 11:00:25
Hi there,

few years ago i founds this vase in my grandfathers house when he passed away.

I always thought that it's been made from clay or some sort clay mix with something else..

Few days ago (on bank holiday day) i had a guest which stated that it is not made from clay and he said that it is made from some sort rock or mineral.

I'm very curious what it is. Would be great to hear some opinions on that one.

Some links to pictures below.

Cheers

If you're hoping for jade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jade) I think you're out of luck.

It does look like pottery to me : the clay has been carved or moulded , then black-glaze sparingly-applied. It looks like an inexpensive tourist-souvenir , ( rather than a priceless ming vase ).

i think you are worry to much about how much it can be worth. Thank you for "clay shoot" but you can keep it for yourself. jealousy kills people from inside.

Are there any marks on the vase to identify the maker?  Normally these can be found on the base.  Normally only unique pieces lack this information and will only have the makers signature.

Another thing to consider is that your guest may have been a bit tricksy... Considering clay is a mineral.. the following is a quote from Wiki on clay; Clay is a fine-grained natural rock or soil material that combines one or more clay minerals with traces of metal oxides and organic matter.

I have trawled the internet looking at images of vases and the only ones I could find that resemble the one you have are made from clay. Looking at your picture it also appears that there is a black glaze and there are some horizontal lines on the surface that suggest the material was plastic whilst being worked.

Maybe if your still not 100% sure and want more investigation then post a picture of the underside of the vase and also a picture of the vase in its entirety.

Thank you for your respond!

Few things to mention:

It is made from 5 different pieces, bottom + 4 sides, this confirms that it been carved from different pieces and put together. ~21.5cm tall.

You can take a look at different vases which been made from any sort rock/mineral and you can try find whats been done from few different pieces - at any age and you can try find something similar what fits my description.

This is not made in any asia country -it is from ancient or early medieval europe.

It is very old.

I met with archeologist on saturday, 3 options available - serpetine family, obsidian family or soapstone family.

Will have to go with X ray fluorescence test to determine exact material from which it's been made & Radiometric Dating test will be carried out.

Archeologist said that he is not seen anything like that before and that things like that should be in museum - and this is coming from a man 60 years old and 35 years in a business.

We can close thread i'm not seeking any answers here anymore :) i have everything what i need.

P.S. Best regards to RD i know you will be reading this - hope you will sleep at night even better from now on!

Have a nice day everyone.

Obsidian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsidian) and soapstone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soapstone) couldn't hardly be further-apart in terms of hardness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale_of_mineral_hardness).
If you are paying for these opinions & tests you may be getting suckered.

If someone was carving each vase individually, why bother doing it in parts ? , just carve the completed pot.  However if it was made via moulding rather than carving , a vase would have to be made in 2 or more pieces.

Apparently you are upset by my comment [#4]. You did ask , almost beg [#1 #3] , for any opinion. So I took the trouble to give you mine , which was not intended as an insult. The artefact looks like something mass-produced : made in a hurry. It may be in the style of an antique : tourist-souvenirs often are "replicas" of ancient originals ... http://www.fotosearch.com/CSP990/k9204422/

You seem to have had a strange response from someone who clearly misjudged you.
Glad he's decided to go before I gave any views. I have experience of carving serpentine and soapstone and can't see how anyone would put them in same group of options (and certainly not with obsidian) or suggest those tests. There is a simple group of test which would narrow it down, but irrelevant now so I'll leave this thread.
