Title: Ideas for school holidays ?
Post by: guest39538 on 17/07/2018 20:12:51
After attending my daughters primary school this afternoon for her leavers tea party, the thought occurred that school holidays are here and I have six week to fill in,  finding  some joy for my children in their lives  , any ideas ?

Play in the park
Visit a museum
Go for a trip on a train
Watch a movie together (an age-appropriate movie)
Learn introductory programming (select school grade): https://code.org/learn
Watch cute animal videos together (eg on Youtube)
Make something together (she should choose what to make)

There is a few planetariums in the Manchester area, a train ride away .  I will try save for the fare, that would be a good day out, thanks for that one. It is still confusing what to do though, especially when when working out finances and the numbers don't quite add up .  Added - Terrible sleep, mind ticking over all night, thinking about fishing and maybe taking my kids swimming although I can't swim lol, I remember being in Blackpool on the beach and my girl went paddling in a tidal pool that was left when the tide was out.  Darn it was scary , she fell backwards , it was probably only about 2 ft of water but wow , I stood up and went to run in but luckily she was not immersed to long and corrected her balance. Just thought I would share this while I sit here pondering.

A lot of things cost money and give you little in return, but just going somewhere new and exploring can create lasting memories for free (or for the cost of bus travel) - enjoying being together while doing something new is often where the best value is found. Buses are expensive too, of course, so consider cycling as a way of getting around, getting second-hand bikes if necessary via the classified ads in a newspaper. (To be self-sufficient, all you need's a pump, enough spanners to be able to get the wheels off and on again, a spare inner tube for each wheel size involved, a set of tyre levers, plus a puncture repair kit in case you get multiple punctures.) Just being able to cycle (via quiet back streets and paths of various kinds) to the edge of town and then to wander through woodland or climb a hill can make a massive difference to quality of life. If there's any water about and a safe way to get out on it so that your children can do some rowing, then do that - they need to do things that take them out of their ordinary lives. Just finding a good tree to climb for ten minutes can be better than an entire beach holiday being toasted in the sun - if your daughter feels too old to be doing that, your son won't. Find out what's within range and budget by asking around. Go pitch and putting if there's anywhere near enough to do that where they don't charge the Earth. Visit a maze. Go to a pick-your-own fruit field and gather strawberries - it's not exactly a holiday, but it's a lot better than staying at home trying to have a substitute life on the Internet. It's in doing anything positive that's different from your humdrum normality that you can create value and make your children feel more alive.

Thank you for that David, we have planned go a walk tomorrow, it is about 3 mile but it won't hurt .  My children are happy in life, but I don't want them to be stuck in the house or playing in the street , I want more for them .   It didn't help my feelings any when the neighbor with about seven kids, who doesn't go work, and ends up with an astro turf back garden with literally a full park in it.  She must be lucky and have family and friends to afford such.  My gardens rough, not much can be done too it.
It is 3.30 am here, I am still up because I have a friend here, we are what is called ''dossing'' about, youtube etc , nothing in particular.
Anyway I do feel my mental health is getting quite strong, my body started to release some chemicals my body was not releasing.  I hope to improve this even more this school holidays by getting out and about.  I had to sell my cycle unfortunately, but I don't mind a walk so all good.

Anyway thanks for caring.

Walking is good and 3miles is a good start, but you need to find activities on the way. Nothing complex, even just talking about life, universe etc is good.

Hey, about digging the garden and turning it into an activity centre your neighbours would envy?

Thinking about it , that would be rather cool .  Typical today my kids friends have turned up , so they are playing with them today.  I will probably cancel my walk now until midweek.  Hopefully, plan on a few more things working out  so we have a better time out, a few ice creams is always nice why out , especially on those hot days,  a few ice creams is more than enough to cool down.
Kids though hey, they think adults have a huge space in pockets full of money , like some vacuum that they can suck money from all day   lol.   I told my kids , it does not work like that , pocket money requires chores, it is not a free ride where they can just take all the time and tell their friends that no problem, Daddy will buy.  I have to tell them my pockets are empty sometimes, I am use to having empty pockets though lol.    I find it better to sometimes give their Mum money to save, we are close in respect to , she would never rip me off and give me full access to her bank, I sort of share her bank, might get her to put a joint account on it though so i have full access without her presence.
I could probably start to save more then and let it accumulate until  I needed it for something or a debt etc.  I can do this anytime, but at the moment low funds of mine in her account are nothing to worry about, but If i had lots of money in there , it would be best to have full access because banks can be funny buggers at times. Wouldn't life be more simple if it worked like the old Gregory Peck movie

In this movie it shows the difference of how poor people and rich people are perceived in life.  This movie was such a classic and told a story of divide between classes.  Life now as not changed much, except Greg would get interest and could survive on that without his dodgey note, sort of how the movie plays out, except he gets free meals etc instead of interest.

Of course kids today would never dream of watching a black and white movie,  they prefer the more modern such as animation, we have got to admit as adults though, isn't modern catchy , who doesn't sing this song?

Well the walking earlier on tired me out, I fell asleep and just woke back up, darn't it , it is like 3 am.

On a health note, is it better to walk in the mornings, dinner time, tea time or later on in the evening?

Or does the time of day not matter ?   (considering breathing conditions and humidity etc).

There are various theories for best time for exercise, but these are generally for high intensity. For normal walking or running it is more a matter of convenience. I walk/run about 5km a day and try to do it early in day otherwise tasks get in the way and it gets squeezed - also it’s cooler.
Great walking nr you eg Roaches and lots of open country. I’ve walked & climbed a lot in the Peaks and there are great places for safe rock scrambling with kids.
Woods are also great for kids, some of our local ones have set up areas for den building with lots of straight branches lying around. Lots to see as well, most woods have Muntjac if you know how to look, lots of other wildlife. Get the book Birdwatching with your eyes closed - there’s an mp3 goes with it -  library should have it, great for getting kids to walk quietly and listen to what is out there.

Yes the peak district is nice, not too far from where I live.  Yesterday brought  back memories of being a child, the walk I went on with my kids, was the walk I use to do when I was kid.  I don't think kids of today make dens, not that I know of anyway.  I thinks consoles have took over children's lives and I intend to make sure my children don't go down that path, I want my children to experience the world in a sense of understanding their natural environment that is around them.
I have been outside today and the UK weather is not letting up any , it is still hot, so I think today, looking on the internet , staying in the shade will be a less exhausting day , I always stay cool when it is hot outside, the sun is not all that, it's not good for you , but sunblock works well, so all good.  I think I will try find some nature videos to watch , the kids will like that .
Go a walk later on when it cools down some  I thinks,  invest my time into exercise and love for my family;  my family the place I have belonging and a meaningful life.  On a really good note, I have been that wrapped in doing thing with my children, I forgot a few times to take my anxiety pills, I have had only one in two days ,  I didn't really need that either but with them being  Beta blockers , it is not advisable to just stop taking them.  Anyway I am off , got things to do today,  thanks for your advice .

The weather can be too "good" - it's best to stay in the shade through the middle of the day (the middle being after one o'clock where you are). If you're going out on hot sunny days, go up at first light and go out early, aiming to be home again by the end of the morning, then sleep through the middle of the day. Otherwise, evening's are good once it starts cooling down a bit. Where it's safe, cycling is much cooler than walking and lets you get to more interesting places without exhaustion.

Thanks for the advice, today me and my kids have mostly sat there talking, it is nice sometimes to have no friends visiting, own time is important and solely on its own merits , a mental relief from the norm.   I think in life though I have trust issues, I don't trust anybody but myself fully, so I tend to keep most of my persona to myself always.
It is like when I am decorating, I don't want the wall papering messed up by some amateur ,  so I always do my own wall papering.   Overlapping seams a common mistake amateur decorators make , one I hate to see no matter who the customer.
I like to have a  tight seam , mix a good paste to gain a strong bond .  Sorry I am blabbing on,  but hey! it is just chat section.

Hi di hi campers, good morning.

I was just reading an article about Channel 4 was looking for a new home, the area where I live made the short list , but unfortunately they failed their bid of being creative enough.   If only I knew, I would of give the local council a hand and gave them some creativeness.

Should have thought of this before, re school holidays. One of my lads works on an "open farm" where they grow, rear, slaughter, process, brew and cook everything that goes into the pub that's also on the estate. Fabulous day out for kids - they can feed the animals, ride around on wagons and ponies, muck about in the barns, learn about farming and food preparation, and get to eat real stuff they saw in the fields. Overnight camping too!

Indeed, I should of , but  my head was not where it should of been.  My kids would love camping , they love the outdoors .  A farm trip for them would be interesting ,  I will have to have a look online to see what is about.   We are having fun anyway , a happy camp, I have plans to sell the rest of my fishing tackle tomorrow so we ca go out Thursday for the day somewhere, there is a city park not too far away that has a lake and sometimes an ice cream van outside.   My little boy will be ten , he is happy as long as we are together doing something on his birthday.  I have no idea what to do in life other than that though, at the moment. I might see if I can find some free online education and get some sort of qualification to pass my time away when I am not busy trying to sort my life out.

Work wise I am at a loss , no idea what to do next really, I like variety ,  maybe I should start growing my own veggies in the  back yard , lol, I am not even sure it is soil, mostly poor quality soil.

I will just have to think hard I guess...

Oh well , end of another day , managed to sell my fishing tackle I had left, on facebook, so my boy gets to go out for the day .  I am not sure where yet though, I will find somewhere nice, somewhere where there is kind considerate people to get along with .
I have always found one strange thing in my life, that those who ever hurt me in anyway, I never had to do a single thing in revenge,  Karma always paid them back.   Funny hey....I thank God for Karma.

Now it is time I talk to my God ..
