Title: Is there any way to halt male pattern baldness?
Post by: Furwa on 07/07/2004 03:34:32
I am a new memember and Im not really sure how this works but um well..I read your article on male baldness, and it had just the information I needed. Thank you for making things easier.
There was one piece of information that I needed and I would be greatful if you could help.
Is there anyway to stop male baldness? Can we control the uptake of DHT by Alfa-5 in anyway,  I mean some pills or something? Or is there any other method to prevent hair loss and make our hair healthier?
I have been through the ordeal of oiling, and some vitamins, good shampoos but it doesnt help.
I will be obliged if you could help.
Regards,
Furwa.
Could you also please mail me back the answer? shimmering_shadowz@hotmail.com

Saw Palmetto extract is good for prostate enlargement because it binds excess DHT, so it may be helpful.

Also, when I changed to a balanced protein diet, my hair loss reversed and I am no longer half-bald.  It also reversed a lot of my grey hair - I still have some, but not nearly as much as before.

Women in my family apparently go grey early (amongst other early things) which worries me so I might have to try that high protein diet as a preventative measure! Furwa, if Tweener's suggestions don't work you could always just keep the rest of your hair REALLY short. That way its harder to notice if someone is going bald and it looks pretty cool too.[;)]

Here's a site that may help:

http://dreampharm.com/saw-palmetto/saw-palmetto-center-2.asp

Doing a Google search on "saw palmetto" will get you more than you can possibly read in a week.  Several of the hits discuss its effect on reducing hair loss.

Good luck!

As for the diet, check out this book:

http://kosmoi.com/Shop/Books/N/0060188790/

This guy is discussing the effects of diet on skin aging and grey hair among other things.

Another site to check out (with very similar diet recommendations) is:

http://www.drsears.com/drsearspages/

I'm not evangelical on much of anything but the Zone diet.  I lost 45 lbs (and have kept it gone for almost 2 years now), got my hair back, feel much better, etc.

No way!  I much prefer the business end of the camera, thus pics of me are fairly rare.

John, your hair looks a little fried.  I'd go a little easy on the bleach if I were you.
For the guys who don't bleach their hair, Rogaine (minoxidil) will stop the hair loss.  Also there's Proscar (finasteride), originally developed for prostate enlargement, that has gotten some impressive hair regrowth.

Yea, normally I wear it a nice deep purple, but sometimes the bleach is good for a change.  And, it doesn't look so fried when it's spiked up!

I'm not surprised you prefer the opposite end of the camera if that's what you look like...

Hey guys sorry for a questions to be my first post but just wondering is anyone has tried LLLT?  Laser therapy…  I’ve tried a few different things but am curious about this.  I’ve been reading http://www.laserhairgrowthfacts.com/How-It-Actually-Works.htmland it presents some good arguments but I don’t want to pay for anything until I have some unbiased thoughts on this?

I started losing my hair in my late 20's.  I tried Minoxidil but it didn't do anything for me except make me feel tired.  Don't let that put you off though as it might work for you.  Fortunately my hair loss was slow and I used a shampoo and conditioner from American Crew which helped for about a year, I bought this from http://www.hairsupermarket.com/ but there will be lots of other places.  When it stopped working (i.e. my hair started thinning again) I then used ProFusion shampoo http://www.prohairbiosystems.com which has stabilised the hair loss, although I haven't spotted any new growth.

The other common treatment is Propecia which is a tablet originally formulated for prostate hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), the active ingredient is finasteride.  I wouldn't start with this because it can affect your hormones and reduce your libido.  Also only obtain it from reputable sources after consulting with your doctor, don't just buy it off the net.  Your doc really does need to know that you are taking this product.

What people find is that they have to mix and match products and not everything works.  So you could start with a shampoo/conditioner and see if that works, then try Minoxidil lotion, see if that helps and then reintroduce the hair loss shampoo, so you are attacking the problem from two sides.  There is not one-size-fits-all but reading the forums it seems that if you are willing to experiment (and we are scientists after all) then you should find a product or a combination of products that works for you.
