I've been trying to figure out the physical meaning of H, B, D and E fields, in Electricity and Magnetism of course, and even though I have seen the equations relating them, I can't seem to discern why there are two names for the magnetic field and two for electric fields. Can somebody help me out please.

If you put matter inside fields, because of induction, this matter, in turn, generate other fields, which add to the previous ones. The inducing fields are D and H, the total fields are E and B.

Wow, that makes so much more sense than anything I have found elsewhere.
