Title: How Can Light Travel At The Speed Of Light ?..And What Is Lights Perception ?
Post by: neilep on 29/12/2007 16:29:34
Dearest Lightologists,

Light is great !..I luff light !..it's my all time favourite way of enabling me to see stuff !!

Here's some light doing some pretty nifty stuff :

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

I want to know two things !!....shouldn't be difficult  !! [::)]

If it's impossible for anything to travel at the speed of light then how come light does ?

If 'light ' was sentient...what would it's perception of the Universe be travelling at the speed it does ?

There !!..see ?...no problem for all ewe lightologists out there.

Thanks

Neil

It's not correct; the impossibility is for bodies wich have mass.

Maybe an infinitely bright and energetic point of light in front of it and darkness in all the other points.
All this for the entire life of the universe (that bright point of light), that is, for an infinitesimal time.

Excellent....so all I need to do is make myself mass-less and then I can zip around rather swiftly !!.....nice !!......so...how do I de-mass myself ?

Hmmmmmm....seeing the Universe from 'lights' point of view may be interesting for a while but I think in ' time ' I would get rather bored !!....perhaps...as a sentient beam of light I could slow myself down for a while and enjoy the sights !!

A photon of light is only "aware" of the instant it is created in an interaction and the instant it is absorbed in another interaction.  It does not matter if it has travelled the distance across a neucleus or the distance across the entire universe for a photon there is no such thing as time.

Thank you IAN....but say (for hypothetical and humoring me sake !)you or I could travel at the speed of light...what would our perception of the Universe be like ?

Exactly the way I said.  You would not be aware of the existence of time! everything that happens happens in front of you and nothing happens behind (assuming you are facing in the direction you travel)
