Title: Colour Therapy & Science
Post by: White on 20/08/2007 19:27:34
Colour Therapy has been used by many ancient cultures including the Native American Indians, Aztecs, Egyptians, and Greeks and was also believed to have been used during pre-Atlantean times. Early civilizations used colour for ceremony, healing, religious purposes and rites of passage. The Ancient Egyptians and Greeks were known to have used temples filled with light and colour for healing purposes.

Colour therapy works on the principle that we all are in need of light and colour to keep well balanced and in good health. Natural daylight contains all the colours of the spectrum that our energy centres need in order to stay well physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. It is essential that we spend a minimum of half an hour a day in natural daylight whatever the weather, as we absorb light and the coloured rays through our eyes and skin.

Sir Isaac Newton scientifically verified the existence of colour within natural daylight in the 1670's. He passed light through a prism which split the natural white ray of light into seven colours: red, orange, yellow, green, sky blue, indigo, and violet. This can be seen naturally in a rainbow where droplets of water act like a prism by splitting the white ray into the seven coloured rays of the spectrum.

Newton's studies were purely scientific his work on colour moved the focus away from the esoteric aspects that had previously been explored, researched and documented for many thousands of years by the ancient mystery schools in Greece and Egypt. However science is essential in helping us to understand and evidence the theory behind Colour Therapy.

Colour is easily accessible by us all, it is a vibrational energy that need not be seen to be felt. Blind children have been documented as being able to feel the difference between warm and cool colours by touch alone. When applied with healing in mind, colour can transform, transcend barriers and bring us back to a state of emotional harmony and inner peace.

Vitamin D deficiency Epidemics in the new Millennium.

...Adams: It seems like vitamin D is misnamed. It's not really a vitamin in the classic sense, is it?

Dr. Michael Holick: It's a good point, and the reason for it is as follows. It was recognized in the mid-1800s that if you gave cod liver oil to children who had rickets, it could cure rickets. And if you gave cod liver oil to children without rickets, it prevented them from getting rickets. So people thought that there was a vitamin present that was necessary for bone health. And that vitamin was finally identified by taking cod liver oil and boiling it, because once you boil cod liver oil, the vitamin A in it gets destroyed. Originally they thought it was vitamin A that was responsible for bone health, but when they boiled it and destroyed the vitamin A, the anti-ricketic activity, that is the bone health activity, was still present in the cod liver oil. And so it was named vitamin D, because there had already been identified a vitamin A, a B and a C, so the next in line was vitamin D.

Sunlight was recommended as a therapeutic method to prevent rickets in infants, and a detailed description was published in the United States Children’s Bureau Folder in 1931 (13, 14). It was recognized that in the temperate zone, sunlight was feeble in its antirachitic properties in the winter, and thus, it was recommended that children be exposed to UV radiation from a mercury arc or carbon arc lamp in the winter (5, 6, 13, 14) (Figure 2). During exposure to sunlight, the ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (290–315 nm) is absorbed by 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin to form previtamin D3 (1, 15). Previtamin D3 (1, 15) is inherently unstable and rapidly converts by a temperature-dependent process to vitamin D3 (Figure 3). Once formed, it is ejected out of the skin cell into the extracellular space, where it is drawn into the dermal capillary bed by the vitamin D–binding protein (DBP) (1).

The efficiency of vitamin D3 synthesis in the skin is dependent on the number of UVB photons that penetrate into the epidermis. An increase in skin melanin pigmentation (16) and the topical application of a sunscreen (17), both of which efficiently absorb UVB photons, can markedly diminish by more than 90% the production of vitamin D3. Excessive exposure to sunlight cannot cause vitamin D intoxication because sunlight destroys any excess vitamin D3 produced in the skin (18, 19). Most UVB photons from the sun are absorbed by stratospheric ozone. An increase in the sun’s zenith angle results in an increased path length for the UVB photons to travel, and this explains why at higher latitudes (above ~35° latitude), very little, if any, vitamin D3 is produced in the skin from November through March (19, 20).
