Title: Sun Tan...it's not natural eh ?
Post by: neilep on 15/08/2005 22:07:10
I am not a sun worshipper...I do NOT sunbathe and I hate being caught in the sun....I can't see the point of going on holiday to lie on a beach !...but I was  listening to the radio last night and it was made quite clear that getting a tan is well bad for your skin !..after all it's not natural is it ?...my question is:

What is happening to the skin when people get a tan ?...are they cooking their skin ?...apparently sottish redheads with freckled skin and pale complexions *sigh...such exquisite beautiful creatures* never tan....they go straight to sunburn !!....I've always been aware of the sun..I fry very easily so your kind consideration of this Barbeque orientated topic would be most appreciated....

ps: Oh yes....sunbeds are supposed to be really bad too....I can believe that, I know someone where the bed collapsed while they were using it !![:)]....ha ha what a shame !!

having a natural tan from casual exposure to the sun is not bad for you. i work outside 5 days a week, and i never get burned or have any ill effects. i have a mighty farmers tan. although working(moving, in and out of shade) is probably alot different physiologicly than just lying in direct sunlight.

sunbeds are bad for a variety of other different reasons. people can get serious burns if they are too strong.

im not sure what the attraction is to tanning and tan people. id rather be with an entirely fair-skinned girl then one with bikini tanlines. yuck.

Thanks Gecko......I also remember now that the reason why the body tans is because it is a defence mechanism kicking in ,reacting to the sunlight, though the ideal amount of  direct sunlight required by the body is somewhere around ten minutes a day avoiding the hours 11.00-14.00.....hmmmm...lets hope a passing ' tan upon skin ' expert passes....cheers

Obviosly, if your skin burns easily that's definitely not good for you! Your skin will "remember" it.

quote:
Fair-skinned people are most susceptible to sunburn, because their skin produces only small amounts of the protective pigment called melanin. People trying to get a tan too quickly in strong sunlight are also more vulnerable to sunburn. While they have a lower risk, even the darkest-skinned people can get skin cancer.

Considering that Earth's atmosphere is thinner than it once used to be -- and that there are actual [ozone] holes in it -- that's no good news either.

But on the other hand the sun has been rather friendly towards us -- ice age excluded. We wouldn't even exist without the sun, so it can be said sun tan is natural for us. (There is reason to believe we wouldn't exist without the moon either).

Get your spaceships ready! The sun will explode in 5 - 10 billion years.

I am in AZ and in the sun a lot. I have been blessed with being able to tan with the help of a little sunblock. You won't notice if the sun has done damage for 25 years. At least that's what the dermatologist said to my dad as they took off the basil cell carsinoma from his face. So, the damage you do today won't show up for at least 20 years. I have notice native arizonians that work in the sun have dried skin and wrinkle earlier. They look much older than those of us from the North East. Also it's not always the burning that damages the skin, sun, period is damaging. I always wear a 12 SPF or higher, even though I don't burn without it. It keeps my skin moist and healthy looking while I still get some tan.

I think that going to the beach is a preference. The warm sun, the water crashing on the beach. I don't know why people golf. It's kinda the same priciple I guess.

Thanks Bonnie for your post...I do hope daddy is ok!.....I avoid the sun as best I can...always walk in the shade if there is any...and use factor 30.....

I remember getting the most awful sunburn as a child on my arms and I dread to think if one day soon I'll find something hostile there.

thanks again.

I have some experience that is relevant to this topic. 7 years go a dermatologist removed a melanoma from the back of my right arm. Apparently they caught it in time as I am still alive. In fact after the surgery I had no more ill effects, and I can still use my right arm just as well as before, although it is one hell of a scar.

I was told that I should never go out into the sun without protective clothing or sunblock, and i generally follow the advice. I was told also that ultraviolet light is the main risk factor for skin cancer. Sunburns are stupid, but any UV light reaching your skin carries a risk. I should point out that the thinning of the ozone layer also means that we receive more uv light than people used to 50 years ago. That is a fact, not a theory.
My opinion is that tanning beds should be illegal. I do not expect many of you to agree. But if you had undergone my procedure you might agree. Many melanoma victims do not survive- especially if they let their suspicious-looking mole grow before they see a doctor.

Thanks, neilep.  I just have to share this every time the topic comes up, because i do not wish others to undergo surgery they can avoid with a bit of sun sense.
It's not a case of good tan/bad tan. Repeat after me- all suntan is bad tan, because it is the result of ultraviolet light damage. It may be considered sexy in some circles, but it is never healthy for you.

I agree with being in the sun and having a tan not being the best situation. Unfortunately, I cannot stay out of the sun. Along with a full time job as a social worker, I teach riding lessons and train horses. That's hard to do in the dark ;). In NY, I rarely wore a sunscreen. Here in AZ I don't leave home without it when I'm going to be training. I really should wear it all the time. As a child I've gotten some bad sun burns. Falling asleep while lying in a float on the pool. Just hoping that my Mexican heritage will protect me.

Studies in the last few years have shown that the more sunburns you had as a child and teen the greater your risk of developing skin cancer as an adult.  This includes darker-skinned people--although they take longer to burn than a pasty-face like myself.  When I was a child I got sun poisoning at least once a year--some of my friends tanned by using baby oil, and I thought I could, too.

Nowadays, I use SPF 45 on my face every day (since it gets the most exposure), and when I'm working outside I use copious amounts of SPF 60, wear long, loose clothing, and just hope the baby oil burns don't come back to nip me in the bum...

Stupid California sunshine.  BAH!

I Love the sun [8D][:)]
The way i see it us humans have lived with the sun since we first walked on the earth, And ever since our bodies have learnt to live with it. We haven’t always worn clothes. There's no point blocking out its effects totally.
Stay out of it during the hottest parts of the days and tan yourself slowly and let your body protect you naturally. The sun is good for you in small amounts.
Its a natural source of vitamin d which I believe you need for healthy bones and teeth.
It also increases serotonin levels which makes you happy,[:)]or in my case[:D] which in turn relieves depression [:(]and stress. Two things which are positively bad for you and your health.

If suddenly moon disappeared it is on the cards that it would cause a chaotic diversion of the Earth's axel. In the course of time this would likely (take that with a grain of salt ;) cause major climatic changes. The climatic changes would have -- and would have had -- an effect on evolution. We don't know what those effects might be, but our existence can be called into question by theorizing about the absence of moon.

Furthermore, without moon we wouldn't have the tidal phenomenon which certainly guarantees the existence of some species.

So how did womens 28 day cycle come about.
Ok if the moon suddenly flew off you would still have your period every 28 days.
However i was taught your 28 day cycle was in the long distant past linked with the 28 day lunar cycle.

Is there a doctor out there who can explain why women have a 28 day cycle.

Hi Everybody.

Doctor Neil here....I just found this !

Etymology and the lunar month
The terms "menstruation" and "menses" come from the Latin mensis (month), which in turn relates to the Greek mene (moon) and to the roots of the English words month and moon — reflecting the fact that the moon also takes close to 28 days to revolve around the Earth. (The synodical lunar month, the period between two new moons, lasts about 29 and a half days). Although some women's menstrual periods may conform to the lunar cycle, no necessary connection exists between lunar months and menstrual periods: women show considerable variation in the lengths of their menstrual cycle, and the length of the menstrual cycle differs in different animals

I must admit until I read the above I too thought there might have been a connection....but now I realise the connection is when I just turn into a wolf......grrr grr  snarl snarl !!

I once ordered venison in a pub outside Winchester, and they served me fried chicken, instead...it made me sad.  To this day, I've never had venison.[:(]

Ahem.

As humans moved out of Africa and into cooler climates at higher latitudes, they lost their natural protection from the sun--dark skin pigmentation.  Those of us whose ancient ancestors were from the middle latitudes still have this protection and so can safely bake in the sun (well, relatively safely, anyway), but the rest of us whose ancient ancestors went to the higher latitudes, where the sun doesn't shine as brightly or as long, have lost this protection over time.  This is why fair-skinned people are at greater risk of skin cancer than darker-skinned people--regardless how naked our ancestors were.[8D]

Fair skined people still have natural sun protection.

A sun tan is the bodies natural form of protection from the sun.

........yes but only because the body is under attack from too much ultraviolet...it's defence mechanism.....I really don't know if I would call a sun tan a form of protection !...

Note that skin cancer usually does not kill people who are under thirty. Back in the times of prehistoric man, most everyone was dead before reaching thirty. So it really was not a problem, huh?

Nowadays we have the temerity to hope that we will be alive to see our grandkids reach age 30. Add to that the fact that the thinned ozone layer, as I said previously, is giving us more UV, and we had better get used to sunblock. SPF 30 is a good minimum.

Armani and Versaci, definitely, plus mud. Why not? Even elephants mud bathe! [:)] Simply because it's fun and keeps your skin silky smooth.

Even today some people spend fortunes on mud masks. Google "mud mask" and you'll find lots and lots of advertisements saying that a mud mask with Dead Sea minerals cleanses, detoxifies, and repairs the skin.

Maybe the prehistoric men and women were wiser than we think they were. Perhaps they even invented network marketing and threw Ware (TM) parties. [:D] End of digression.
