Just Chat! / New textbooks
« on: 24/05/2020 19:55:38 »
There are two great new textbooks out that I decided to buy. They are

Modern Classical Physics: Optics, Fluids, Plasmas, Elasticity, Relativity, and Statistical Physics by Kip S. Thorne and Roger D. Blandford,   (2017)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0691159025/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and

Relativistic Classical Mechanics and Electrodynamics by Martin Land and Lawrence P. Horwitz (2020)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1681737086/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The prices aren't that bad either. Each seems great for learning relativity.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / What is this "Fifth Force" I hear about?
« on: 18/12/2019 15:34:07 »
A fifth force has been discovered by a Hungarian this year. See
https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/22/world/fifth-force-of-nature-scn-trnd/index.html

Anybody know much about this?

Just Chat! / How should we interpret data from death statistics regarding drug overdose?
« on: 24/03/2019 22:00:37 »
I talked about this last year but put a hold on it. I'm coming back to it again here.

Someone raised the objection/made a point that the increase in narcotics usage was approximately proportional to increase of narcotics related deaths and asserted that this was an important part of the debate on narcotics use. The problem with that assumption is that its true for all drugs. Even for car usage. Increase the number of drivers by a factor of T and you'll approximately increase the number of deaths due to auto accidents by a factor of T(non-drug related deaths that is). I did learn that many doctors wish to prescribe narcotics but are prevented doing so by the government. Lawmakers etc. = Dumb punks! Grrrrr! :D

Note: Comments like I made about cars are merely rough guesses and apply to particular ranges. These things are models and as such far from being precise. I mention them to make the point that deaths are part of life and acceptable. I.e. I take it as an acceptable risk that I might slip in the shower and snap my neck and die. That doesn't mean I won't take a shower.

I finally got my medical marijuana card but am unable to get to a dispensary (no car to get me there). I can't seem to find one online. Does anybody know of a respectable website for it?

Just Chat! / I need directions in Boston VERY bad
« on: 06/11/2018 23:30:00 »
VERY IMPORTANT - Please help me find a way to my new doctor’s office tomorrow. It’s at 777 Concord Street, Cambridge MA (USA) and I’ll be starting from North Station in Boston (a train station). For the life of me I can’t figure out how to use the internet to find it. If you can find the closest subway stop then I’ll be all set. Thanks.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Should we have an FAQ on physics here?
« on: 13/10/2018 17:53:26 »
I brought this up in the past to admin who I think said they'd think about it or something like that. But I think it'd be a great idea to have a sticky on Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) so newbies can check there to see if they're question is already there waiting for them or to give them a starting point to create a new thread on.

What do you think? Should an  FAQ sticky be created for this forum? What about in each forum? I volunteer to do some of the work in the areas of physics I know well.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Where did Rindler write about relativistic mass and potential energy?
« on: 12/10/2018 23:01:13 »
I recall Rindler writing in one of his texts stating that relativistic mass does not depend on the position dependent potential energy? I know it was in one of his texts but I can't find it now. I mentioned it here befoe but I can't find it for the life of me. Does anybody remember me pointing that out? Thanks.

Physiology & Medicine / How dangerous is Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)?
« on: 09/10/2018 20:12:03 »
I was diagnosed Tuesday with Basal Cell Carcinoma. It started out with a mole on my nose that I've never seen before. I was going to ignore it, i.e. wait to see if it grew larger. It grew larger. My surgeon told me it was Basal Cell Carcinoma.

How dangerous is this. I'd normally search the internet about it but I'm kind of in stun mode.

Physiology & Medicine / What are the earliest signs Parkinson's disease?
« on: 11/09/2018 22:24:14 »
I appear to have early signs of Parkinson's. I can't stop my hands from shaking most of the time. My feet shake like I'm nervous but I can't easily stop them. It just occurred to me to look up the symptoms of Parkinson's and I have a few of them. Please tell me what the earliest of signs are.

Just Chat! / Jean Luc Picard back in a new Star Trek spin-off!
« on: 20/08/2018 12:12:09 »
https://coed.com/2018/08/04/sir-patrick-stewart-net-worth-star-trek-x-men-contract-salary-money/

Quote
In 2018, it was announced that he would reprise his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a Star Trek spin-off focusing on the character.
See YouTube video of him confirming it at
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/patrick-stewart-reprise-star-trek-role-new-cbs-all-access-series-1132262

Very very cool. I myself and not that thrilled with the new star trek series - They cut down the number of epiosodes other trek series had in half. That's just bad cricket in my book. I hope they don't make the same mistake in this new Sar Trek series.

I wonder if any of the cast members will be in it or if Frakes will direct any of them. Opens the door to new start trek movies other than what we have now.

Geek Speak / How do I link a "Galaxy Tab 10.1" tablet to a PC via USB?
« on: 15/08/2018 02:29:44 »
I can't figure how to move files from my download directory to my computer when I connect them together through USB. I need help. How do I do this?

Thanks.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Is Dark Matter Real?

Is Dark Matter Real?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Way too many times physics amateurs have posted claiming dark matter isn't real and we should listen to them etc. I've ignored those threads because they weren't credible. However there's an article on this subject in Scientific American this month entitled Is Dark Matter Real by two astrophysicists.

See: http://www.newenglandphysics.org/other/SciAmDarkMatter.pdf

Let me know what you think.

Just Chat! / Ahoy there
« on: 27/07/2018 21:28:25 »
The captain of a ship was outside taking in the atmosphere on a deeply foggy night. All of a sudden he sees a light coming toward him and says:

Captain: Ahoy there. Give way. We have the right of way so change course!

A voice returns: You change course!

Captain: I just said that WE have the right of way so YOU change course.

Voice: I won't do that. You change course.

Captain: Change course, you hear me? We're a battleship! We'll run you over. What are you?

Voice: A lighthouse!!

The captain then changed course. :D

« on: 30/06/2018 21:42:51 »
I only recently heard about this bit coin thing (from "The Big Bang Theory") so I don't know how it works. But I came across something which gives me a need for it. How do I buy bitcoin?

He does something fishy starting at the bottom of page 65. Do you see it too?

Just Chat! / Books on differential geometry
« on: 14/06/2018 03:06:24 »
In a recent thread in the physics forum someone asked about good books on differential geometry. Two that are really good are

Differential Geometry by Erwin Kreysig

Geometrical Methods of Mathematical Physics by Bernard Schutz

One that looks good but I haven't had the chance to read yet is

Introduction to Vectors and Tensors by  Bowen and Wang

Texts on tensors are often texts on differential geometry. There's also a Schaum's outline book on differential geometry which I recall being good.
