Title: How many calories would I burn if I ran 5 miles?
Post by: Simulated on 05/11/2008 22:16:27
Approximatly how many calories would I burn if I ran 5 miles at around 12 mph the whole time, weighing 130 pounds? If you need any other information just ask. Or if you could just send the equation that would be nice also =D. Thanks!

Dearest geeza,

I have found that from the speeds of 4mph through to 6 mph I average about 120 calories per mile !

here is my formula.

stand on treadmill...turn on treadmill....walk fast on treadmill...read treadmill display !

Hope this helps somewhat !

There will be more air resistance running outdoors than running on a treadmill, (torso is not moving forward on treadmill), so a few more calories per mile are required when running outdoors.

Per Mile Energy Net Energy Cost Calculations

The following are the approximate net energy cost calculations for walking and jogging a given distance, eg. 1 mile:

Moderate-paced Walking: The net* caloric cost per mile of walking up to 3.5 mph is 0.77 kcal/kg/mile (eg. for a 154 lb person this would be 54 net calories per mile). This formula holds true for most walkers. The gross caloric cost for this same mile is 90-100 kcal.

Fast walking: From approximately 3.5 mph to 5 mph of walking (speed walking) the net energy cost is 1.38 kcal/kg/mile (eg. for a 154 lb person this would be 97 net calories per mile). Note that at the very fast walking speeds (>4 mph) the net energy expenditure of walking and running a mile are almost the same.

Jogging/running: the net caloric cost per mile is 1.53 kcal/kg/mile (eg. for a 154 lb person this would be 107 net calories per mile).

Treadmill walking or running: the caloric cost of walking or running a given speed and grade is generally 10-15% lower than that indicated on the treadmill LED display. The LED displays usually display the gross cost of walking and running.

Net caloric cost per mile of running is nearly twice that for walking one mile at moderate pace (Howley & Franks, 1997). This is a very important point for those who intend to prescribe and quantify walking mileage for weight control purposes.

Treadmills, they can't be trusted. Haha.
So I'm running double that 8-12 mph so 240, just to guess. times 5
so i've burned well over 1,000 calories. haha. but here's the thing. i don't sweat at all anymore (maybe cuz the weathers wondeful) and my heartrate is just A LITTLE above resting heartrate.
Man, that must mean i'm amazing ha

thanks for that RD!
soo with that equation..
1.53 kcal/kg/mile

i'd type in.. 1.53 x kcal (what i'm solving for?)/my weight in kg (wait whats the conversion for that again.. man mrs. a would kill me ha)/mile.
you divide? hum..

2.2 pounds in a kilo, so 130 pounds = 59 kilos.
1.53 x 59 = 90.27 Calories (Kcal) per mile.
At 12 mph (almost world-record marathon pace) 90.27 is probably an underestimate.

Thanks RD.
See, i'm not running a marathon its only a few miles.. haha i'd probably die if i tried running a marathon. I say 12 because my dad passed me while i was 5ish miles into my run and he said i was going 11 mph. that's it? humm, seems like it would be more
but thanks again!

humm, seems like it would be more

The ~100 Calories per mile is the net amount of energy used by running.
The gross total amount of energy used would be greater,
as it would include the energy you would have expended during this period had you sat still.

Most people burn 70 to 90 calories per hour at rest.
That means that if you sit on the couch for ten minutes instead of running a mile, you'll burn just 12 calories instead of 100.

A mars bar will take you to the top of a 1000m mountain - if all you count is the gain in gravitational potential energy.
