Why??

What do you mean by "punish themselves"?
Are you referring to "punishment" in the Max Moseley sense (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1033319/Our-kinky-games-Max-Mosley-Girls-tell-sex-session-Grand-Prix-boss--deny-Nazi-orgy.html) or do you mean people self-harming as a means of psychological release, or people who inflict self-deprivation to atone for a perceived failure or expunge feelings of regret?

I think there's at least 3 ways peoples could be inflicting some form of "self-punishment" on themselves, namely:
- Heavy drug use (think cocaine or heroin) ...
- Toxic and emotionally abusive (love/hate) relationships ...
- Someone who like getting aroused with fetish like role games and weird power trips ... (there's multiple variations of this behavior)
There might be other forms of psychological self-punishment im not aware of, but theses are the primary forms I'm interested to understand.

For example, I consider accepting to use potentially harmful technologies like chronic mobile devices on a daily basis a form of psychological punishment, assuming people are self-aware of the risks that such things may represent for their own mental health or neurosecurity... :)

I think that some people punish themselves so severely that they seek escape in addictions - to work, alcohol and other drugs, gambling, sex and/or computer games. Or watching TV, listening to music incessantly, social media or discussion forums (fora?).

Hi evan!
I'm glad you restarted talking to me... :)
I partially agree with your comment, but I'm not sure I understand exactly the relation between addiction and self-punishment. If you have more details it would be great to discuss further.
Thank you!!

When I was growing up Catholic in the olden days we used to wear a scapular I believe it was called. It hung around your neck, had a very irritating surface against your skin. I think the rationale was to keep your mind open to the suffering of others and remind you to stay humble.

When there is an election or referendum or some such I buy a bottle of high class wine to celebrate if the cause that I support prospers and a bottle of very low grade stuff as punishment if my cause fails partly because I did not do enough to propagate it.

is overworking a complex form of self-punishment?
thank you in advance

it may seem strange to someone but an ideal personality pattern (at least this confirms Calhoun's experiment) is a sophisticated psychopath and erudite completely devoid of emotions and killing all individuals who stand in his way or are unable to pass on his own course of reasoning. If you can not convince someone, you should kill him, if you do not do it yourself, you will become a victim who chose that way. This fully explains why people in high positions have this type of personality traits. Any moment of breakdown push you to be eaten by this type of unit. If such activities are illegal (each country with few exceptions), it is necessary to introduce anarchy in such a country, kill the rulers or bring the country into a state of war, where killing others is no longer a crime and a consequence. Virtually every unit that you are an employee of any company, organization or government carries out all orders of such persons. Being a sophisticated psychopath is a must. It is such an atomic balance that reduces the aggression of those who use this type of features in extremely bad intentions.

hi
is it possible that people looking for creative ways to punish themselves could be trying to use psychological self-defense mecanisms to not become someone else? [1]
Thank you in advance,

That's an interesting question. I think this has something to do with emotion, but not sure

Yep. We believe psychological self-punishment is a defense mecanism to conciliate pleasant and painful
emotions together to enhance synaptic pruning of bad memories...
There's still a lot of things thought that we would like to understand better on psychological self-punishment. Its probably also related to how the brain can protect/repair itself from microaggressions and cognitive attacks in order to become stronger.
Hope this helps.
