If I remember correctly the proper answer is Q5 R9 you were supposed to report reception on a scale of 1-5 but people got upset if you reported less than 5.

syhprum,

you must certainly be trained in communications; I have never encountered this protocol before.

my only experience in radio contact was in the Coast Guard, and working on boats in the sport fishing industry; when "loud and clear" was the response to a caller requesting a radio check, and the reception was received with high volume and little garble.

No this was simply the pre-war amature radio jargon as a boy I was keen on amature radio but became disillusioned as no one ever had anything intelligent to say and proficiency in archaic Morse code was a requirement to transmit.

"archaic Morse code was a requirement to transmit."

altho I am rusty in Morse code, I think this "archaic" form of communication might at some time save your life.

if you can reach any type of airborne signal, by interrupting it with a series of dots and dashes will enable you to communicate with anyone able to read you. (even a prison mate reading your message via airborne vibrations over walls and bars).

sure, but try to find a computer that works when the internet collapses, or you find yourself in jail :)
