Title: Has anyone here heard of joseph emidy?
Post by: paul cotter on 26/10/2022 13:29:49
Joseph Emidy, a native of west Africa, was captured as a slave by the Portuguese and brought to brazil to work on the plantations. His musical abilities were discovered and encouraged by his captors and he ended up in Lisbon performing in an orchestra. From here he was kidnapped by the british navy and forced to entertain the crew of a battle ship. Finally released in cornwall he settled down to a conventional life and became a music teacher and leader of the orchestra in truro. He also apparently composed music but unfortunately none has survived.  Why do I bring this bit of ancient history up? I found out about 15 years ago that I am a descendent of Joseph Emidy but unfortunately I did not inherit any of his musical talents.

An extraordinary story. Not sure where one would search for old orchestral scores, but given the quantity and quality of junk in most brass band cupboards, it's hard to believe that his legacy has been completely purged. Might be worth contacting The British Bandsman to see if anyone has anything relevant in their archives.....

I personally have never done any research on this matter but others have and the perceived wisdom is that none of his compositions have survived. He seems to have triggered a highly fecund offspring with multiple descendants and some of these have looked in vain.

That’s quite an amazing family history.
The search @Zer0 suggests also throws up a Thomas Emidy who’s music does survive. There seem to be quite a few people working to get Joseph’s story out there.

Are there any other family members who show an innate talent for music?

Colin2B, I can't give you a definitive answer at the moment as I can't find the family history which exists only in hard copy. For certain, some of my maternal grandmother's siblings had musical aptitudes. When I find said history I will elaborate.
