Title: maps upside down?

If you look at a map of the world, the continents get narrower at the southern part and wider in the northern part of the world (like a top spinning) (gravity?).  If there is an up and down to the universe, the southern part of the world could actually be the top.  Our world maps may be upside down...

yes, why do maps and globes portray the world the way they do ? With North at the top and South at the bottom ?

I would suppose we put North on top because global navagation was developed in the Northern hemisphere. The only feature that "stayed put" was Polaris, the north star. All of the early maps would be oriented toward that only reliable benchmark.
