We don't know for sure since we haven't seen them yet.

What we do know is that the rotation rate of galaxies seems to indicate (based on our current understanding of how gravity works) that there is a bunch of mass in each galaxy that we can't see.  Since we can't see it, that means it doesn't emit or reflect light, hence we call it dark.  It's also possible our theories of gravity are wrong, but since the easiest explanation is that there's just matter out there that's hard to see, that's where most people are looking for the answer.  We already have one example of such matter already--the neutrino.  But neutrinos tend to be too light and quickly moving to explain the effects we see.

We also know that when we look at the universe, it appears to be expanding at an accelerating rate.  Again, according to our current theories of gravity, this can be easily explained if there's extra energy in the universe that we currently don't see.  It could also be explained if our theories of gravity are wrong.  But again, it's easier to check the obvious answer first by searching for this energy while keeping our current theories, hence it's called "dark energy" for energy we can't see.  :)

Dark Matter is the matter which is postulated to exist in order to explain some of the anomolous astrophysical observations regarding regular attractive gravity. Dark Energy is the matter which is postulate to exist in order to explain the fact that the universe is expanding at in increasing rate. Dark matter is attractive  whereas dark energy is repulsive.

Dark energy may not be in the form of particles whereas it is expected that Dark matter may either be a new form of matter or an old form of matter but in such abundance that it can account for the effects. E.g. the dark matter could very well be a huge number density of black holes or brown dwarfs.

At this present time in our universe expansion dark matter is quark gluon plasma in folded space/time.
As our universe continues to expand this dark matter is stretched and ripped allowing protons/neutrons/electrons to form,
The longer our universe expands the less dark matter/fuel there is to hold the expansion, that is why the universe expansion is now speeding up.

Sunshaker  - please keep speculation to the New Theories board and do not use your own ideas to answer questions on the main boards.  thanks

Is Dark Energy present in our Solar System and Milky Way?Is Dark Matter a part of Black hole?or supports?Because i have made a theory of Black Hole in which includes Dark Energy is include in Black Hole.....can i post my theory in New Theories??will it be safe?

You can lose a right to the property. You can't lose your half-theory. ;)
