Post by: paul.fr on 26/03/2007 11:02:09
When i wash Anastasia's hair she always moans that the shampoo gets in her eyes and covers them with a flannel, so i am going to buy some of that no more tears shampoo for her.

What is different in this formula to regular shampoo?

You know I don't know but I used it for my kids and my mother used it for us. It works and doesn't burn your eyes!

There's a different active ingredient present.

In order to remove oil, you need a surfactant that can bring the oil into water.  The surfactant has one region that likes oil and another that likes water.  The oily part is attracted to the oil, leaving the water-loving part sticking out of the little microdrop of oil.  In this way, the microdrop can stay in water and not accumulate into a larger drop or even separate out.

Most shampoos use active ingredients called sulfates.  These are (as we all know) somewhat irritating if they get in the eyes.  "No-tears" shampoos typically use something called betaines, which are non-irritating.

I'm not certain for the reason behind the irritation caused by sulfates, but it may be caused by the fact that the sulfates also contain ammonium ions.  Ammonium is a slightly acidic ion, so this may be the cause of the irritation.  Ammonium sulfates are preferred over sodium sulfates for personal care products (like shampoo and hand soap) because the sodium salts are too good at removing oils.  This has a tendency to strip the oils from your skin and hair, which isn't healthy.

By the way.. parafens apparently cause breast cancer. So watch out for parafens in the ingredients. It's not scientifically proved that it CAUSE breast cancer, but most people with breast cancer had parafens within them.

Also, for men.. Do not get Tea Tree Oil or Lavender Oil, as it helps develop man breasts. (Man boobs [:P]). Just a hint!

i think you mean "parabens", they do not cause cancer. Dr Chris pointed this out in a thred in the last week. i will look for the topic later and put a link to it here.

Er; hang on here?
"but most people with breast cancer had paraf(b)ens within them."
Most people diagnosed with breast cancer probably had breakfast within them but that doesn't prove breakfast causes cancer.
The parabens get used in a lot of things so it's no wonder they are found in people with cancer.
Does the linked page tell a more sensible story?

Yeah, I'm waiting for the link, but Paul hasn't sent the link yet. However, I'm pretty sure that Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil develops a male's breasts. Although this isn't scientifically proven neither, I think there may just be a link somewhere between them two. [:D]

if it helps, this is what chris had to  say

Quote
Body odour is the product of bacterial metabolism. Bugs thriving in the damp, warm underarm environment of the average armpit break down dead skin cells and in the process release volatile compounds, some of which don't smell very agreeable.

There are several ways to tackle the problem, the simplest being to shower several times a day. But that's not always very practical, so most people use deodorants of one type or another. These contain volatile perfumes which are evaporated from the skin alongside the sweat and therefore help to mask the unpleasant smells. Critically though they don't do very much to stop the production of the nasty smells so you eventually end stinking anyway.

Antiperspirants, which are often combined with deodorants, work differently. These preparations are designed to reduce the volume of sweat on the skin surface, plunging the bacteria into the microbial equivalent of a desert and therefore making it much harder for them to multiply.

They work by forming tiny plugs where the sweat gland ducts open onto the skin surface. This stops the sweat emerging, keeping things dry. The chemicals used include aluminum chloride, aluminum chlorohydrate, and aluminum-zirconium compounds.

Contrary to popular myth, there's no evidence linking the use of these agents to breast cancers.

Erm, yes. Chris' point was interesting. But what relevance does it have with this topic. [:P]
