The UK system had 377 active lines and was supposed to interlace but in reality only high grade monitors did infact interlace virtually all domestic receivers simply paired the frames up giving a 188 llne picture how ever carefully one tried to adjust them. The worlds first TV system when we invented TV used a lot of German and American equipment
The Americans started it in 1932 with more razzmatazz's than competition then the Germans followed on in 1936 with lots of politics (but with interesting TV technology) then we had a 12 year break while we were killing each other but the Helsinki games in 1948 were pretty sober.
There where many problems the only wide band channel was an experimental satelite with a band width of 5MB's and the original TV standard was 525 lines 60 frames and the UK standard was 405 lines 50 frames. It was not a great success !
The Hubble telescope started life during the "cold war" as a modified version of a high technology reconnaissance satellite system. I understud about six units were built but never put into service. As the cost consists mostly of the research and develop time would it not have been expedient to have built at least one spare
My main reason for publishing this nonsense (which is now repeated by the Scientific American) was to point out the distortion of values of energy etc that commonly occurs when articles are quoted. If the original figure for the amount of energy was 10 to the power 60 ergs (10^60) a vast amount this is often quoted as 1060 ergs as pointed by bored chemist a tiny amount. This does not confuse the mathematical literate and only raises a wry smile but might confuse others !
Early in April when I first read this article it seemed quite authentic , written by a genuine astronomer as he spoke of Angstoms and ergs. Quite a few ergs were needed 160 I believe which will have to wait till we finish beveloping our fusion plants which should not be long
The sledge accelerating experiments were interesting as for a short time they resulted in the highest speed any human had travelled (about 1000 mph) , the vehicle was accelerated by a rocket engine and slowed by a water brake. Racing drivers occasionally suffer 50g acceleration if they run into Tyre barriers but live to tell the tale.
Each morning I am awakened to Sky TVs,s world wide temperature chart and it is interesting to compare temperatures between places such as Kuwait and Stanley for most of the year Kuwait is 40°C hotter but occasionally for one or two days of the year Stanley is hotter!. Today is the summer equinox and it is a strange fact that the summer and winter ones in the UK tend to have the same temperatures in the 10 to 12 degree range. There are plans afoot to widen the orbit of the Earth to reduce global heating I hope nothing comes of it as it will spoil the eclipses
It was rather the answer I expected ,if it was a good Idea some one would already be doing it. I wonder if the technicians who have their hands on these things sneak in a bit of processing for unworthy causes ?
I have started to use the efficient deaf aid issued by the NHS 3 three years ago and have been reading all I can find. All the adverts emphasize how inconspicuous they are as if there was something deeply shameful about being deaf (like having (HIV), I would be happy to wear a gaming head set if it did a good job I am in no way ashamed of being deaf !
I did not of course contemplate envisage importing heat as such only electricity generated by geothermal heat. it seemed a good idea one hundred years ago but other ways of generating electricity have rather made it obsoleate. the imminent development of cheap simple fusion plants makes it even less likely that it will ever come to pass.
