Title: Why Do We Readily Accept The Nature Of Our Dreams When Asleep ?
Post by: neilep on 15/04/2011 16:21:51
Dearest Dreamologists,

As a sheepy I of course luff to dream !...dreaming is all I think about all day and night.....so much so that I even dream about dreaming dreams ...which is nice.

Look...here I am dreaming about my favourite thing..

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

............me of course !.... [;D]

What I would like to know is how come we accept the nature of the dream so readily in our dreams ?

I know we are asleep enjoying REMjoy...but..there must be some level of consciousness that allows us to validate the experience as a dream and therefore we accept it despite the bizarre circumstances !

so...why do we (in our dream state) readily accept the events of the dream as the norm  ?

Cos...well...I just do not know and I wonder if anyone knows....so....how about some speculation niceness to make me smile ?

hugs and shmishes

You mean this is the reality and not the dream!
Oh no!!!  [:o]

I have known thinking 'this doesn't seem right' in dreams.
Or, very occasionally, 'Ahhh, this is a dream!' an kind of been able to steer it.

Perhaps, the explanation lies in why, most of the time, when the dream is going in a positive direction it swings to a new, more dark situation - Ie. it's a 'playing out' of base emotions - rather than a coherent narrative.

Thank ewe Peppercorn and RD.

I have had two lucid dreams where I enjoyed control of the dream and also realised that I was in control too.

My dreams are usually very bizarre....completely surreal and always vivid...and yet...when I awake.....I realise that whilst dreaming the dream.......that  I was quite happy to accept the events in the dream as quite normal !...and this is what confounds me !

That's an excellent question, Neil. I wonder if we accept it because it's coming from the parts of the brain that usually interpret external reality for us? As our only real perception of objective reality stems from this brain activity in wakefulness, the distinction between perception of reality and perception of dreams may be very fine.

Dreams could be educational: like running a computer simulation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolutionary_computing), partially based on past events, with some random variations and combinations thrown in. So in the dream one could possibly discover a better solution to past problems which may reoccur.

If you realized a dream was just a dream, rather than interpreting it as real, you wouldn't engage with it and miss out on possibly learning something beneficial from it. So it could be an evolutionary advantage to view dreams as real.

[Bear in mind “perception of reality” is just a simulation (model) of the real world running on your wetware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetware_%28brain%29) ].

I wonder if its the state of imagination we can experience when story telling mixed and intertwined fantasies or thoughts we have not explored consciously because the learned part of our brain is basically trained to think a certain way and the unconscious brain may well explore ideas on their own a bit like a newborn brain might experience with unknown ideas sights feelings etc...kinda in what we would really like to be able to do or thoughts
That we dare'nt express as sane individuals..LOL.  Now that whole statement may be only a thought that my own brain can understand...LOL.. but anyway.. Thats it for my two cents worth! I hope it made you smile and giggle... now on the other hand the following may or may not apply...?
When I was small I learned how to change the outcome of a dream.. It started after my first funeral for my Grandpa.. I had nightmares of him being dead and swinging from a rope swing from a forest bank and swooping down to take me with him.. but the closer the swing came to me the more horrified I was because I dreamed his body particularly his face and hands were already that of a buried decomposing body, you know, the rotting flesh with maggots crawling in and out of the bloody dripping mess of what was left of my grandpa..a grotesque child hood thought of death....Anyways details aside it was a very lucid dream that repeated nightly on a regular basis to the point that I ended up having some grief counseling which led to me finally being able to take control of the dream and guide it into a better place so that The dream became less horrifying and I was no longer afraid to sleep because of the dream. My opinion really but I believe lucid dreaming is a really fabulous useful way to overcome some of our innermost fears if we learned to take control of them to our advantage.

I was about to suggest that.
Anyway, you can try and get a lucid dream easily. There are many techniques that are very easy to follow.

I have had several nightmares recently where I woke up because they were so stressful.  So in a way my brain was rejecting the dream and waking up is part of that rejection process.

What I would say is that we don't always accept the nature of our dreams and in fact deal with this by waking up.

Probably the main purpose of the dream is to keep us asleep (not realizing that we are only lying in bed). So any noise or vibration or bodily function that tends to command our waking attention is "explained away" with some urgent fantasy, which becomes more "urgent" as the invasive sensation tends to wake us until it finally does.

I noticed that this urgency can happen quite rapidly, for example....... Quite stupidly, and I say that with hindsight, I put a king size mattress onto a queen size base.  This led to an overhang........ anyway three nights ago I was in the middle of a lovely dream and suddenly the boat started to capsize!  I actually woke up as the bed must have been at about 45% and I was about to hit the deck, literally!!  Needless to say I picked myself up from the floor, righted my bed and mildly disgruntled from my night time antics quickly fell back to sleep!

That is a very common situation.. I have dreamed of falling when I hit the ground I have also hit the ground of my bedroom floor! Almost always fall off the bed so I started trying to wake in time to catch myself from falling off the bed... I wonder if my subconscious knows I am too close to the edge of the bed and our dreams incorporate the falling from the bed to the situation in the dream??  Perhaps a fall from a cliff, building and or a tree, etc. Do you know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean Karen W, and it also raises the question about how we perceive time during our dreams.  For example I am pretty sure that the time it took for me to turn over and therefore cause the bed to tilt and throw me onto the floor was about 1-2 seconds maximum.

sleep with tv on affects my dreams & u cant beat a sweet talking seller. Violent tv makes for anxiety dreams which suck!
Dream control= fall asleep while specifically listening to a tick tock or any noise that will be present thru the nite. As u dream, the noise will be present in ur ears & u can tell if ure dreaming if u identify the presence of the noise in the room= u aint gonna control the dream nature but if its anxiety u can dismiss the anxiety from realizing its just a dream............ithinx

I actually believe that falling asleep with the TV on is dangerous, and I do not mean from a physical point of view.  I stopped watching TV about 5yrs ago and have not possessed one in that time.  TV is a control tool for the masses and early development of programming in America is evidence of that.  Of course these days the techniques employed are a lot more subtle and are underpinned by scientific research.
I wonder how many people have woken up after a night of TV sleeping and suddenly had the urge to go and buy something they were exposed too during advertisements during their sleep?

Actually it was a ship and I have no recollection of where I was heading apart from the fact that all of a sudden the thing began to capsize for no reason!  [:D]

given that a lot of people do seem to sleep with the TV on begs the question, are some adverts targeted at people who are asleep?  Now that is scary...

i wet the bed till i was 7. Had 2 dreams which i learned to recognize which were associated with wetting. The main 1 was straining with a stuck faucet which when i strained,i peed. 2 was simply looking at a toilet which prompted me to pee. Eventually I recognized the dreams & awoke so to go to bathroom & the bed stayed dry.
Later in my teen years i had different wet dreams which were also embarrassing but I miss them now! Kids can be foolish

LOL... I have the same thing happen as an adult but it did not start till after the birth of my 1rst child. I have a dream where I really really really have to use the restroom, but every time I find a facility or toilet, I look sit down and then look up and their are no walls or people can see me from outside or some such indignity...lol so I jump up and continue my search  until I find a place with privacy and then if I sit and go.. You know that really good feeling you get when you finally release a full bladder of fluid... well if that is happening in my dream I best get my tail-feathers up and run to the loo as my bladder is about to really let loose..... LOL.. This happened to me twice as I let loose in a dream so I recognize it now and hustle out of bed...LOL.. So embarrassing but that dream becomes a reality if I don't head its prompts to me.. I now look at this as a wake up call. The same kinda dream pursued in my younger days but dealt with seeing blood, like I cut my finger or leg or someplace and saw blood in my dream.. if I did not rise, I had always started my menstrual cycle, and at that moment... It was so weird but from then on if I saw red blood in my dream I very quickly exited my bed to the loo!  Usually at the point I knew I had cut myself and was about to see blood! LOL.. I know that is weird but it is very true!

I reckon as we seem to be talking about the unintended release of bodily fluids that the worst one must be when you think you need to fart but have also eaten something a little dodgy!  This is a most unpleasant feeling as you realise that gas what not the only thing you just let go!  Fortunately this has not happened in a dream!
