Hello,

The major thing I do to avoid future kidney stones is drink, drink, drink.  And pee, pee, pee.  Keeping that fluid moving in my body has been working very well for 8 years now. I try to drink seven 16.9 oz. bottles of water a day.  This is usually the only thing I drink, not 7 bottles added to my typical drinks.

For the sake of my question if, during the day, I stop at a restaurant and order a 16.9 oz thick milk shake, after my body is done processing it how much fluid does my body take out of that?

My main goal for the question, besides pure curiosity, is would that shake effectively take the place of one one bottle of water or would it be like drinking half a bottle instead.

I saw one estimate that a milkshake has a density of around 0.7, ie 70% of water. I am sure there is a lot of variation around this figure, depending on how long you let it stand.

If you let it stand a long time, it will effectively become milk, with a density around 1.03 (slightly higher than water), and around 1% fat.

This suggests that the milkshake is around 30% air, so a 17oz glass containing a milkshake would contain about 12 oz of water.

For calorie consumption reasons, don't try to replace your water intake by milkshakes.

Thank you for the information, and yes, I know replacing the water with a milkshake is diabetes heaven...but there you go.
