They cleaned it at the time.
My recollection is that they removed what they referred to as "a white dielectric substance" in the published paper.

I don’t know how true it is but I was once told the pigeons were re- homed and they did what pigeons do and promptly returned, so they were dispatched to a more permanent retirement.

Went there again today with my wife, she was flabbergasted that such a piece of history would be sitting rotting in a back lot, the Smithsonian wants the ear but Bell refuses to sell.  I am going to go back with my Nikon and various lenses to take better photos.  As for the poop, there is still plenty of it and a herd of whitetail running around as well.

Either they used really good paint back in the day, or someone has been painting it regularly which is all the maintenance it needs.

It was not built to be kept indoors..

The paint is peeling and they have turned it down so no rain collects in the dish.  The device actually needs to be cleaned, refinished, lubed and rotated to keep the parts from rusting together.  The space shuttles were not built to be indoors either but that is where they are, along with the Messerschmitt 262 and Horton flying wing remnants
